Athletics events at the 2012 Summer Paralympics were held in the Olympic Stadium and in The Mall in London, United Kingdom, from 31 August to 9 September 2012. Classification Athletes were given a classification depending on the type and extent of their disability. The classification system allowed athletes to compete against others with a similar level of function. The athletics classifications are: *11–13: Blind (11) and visually impaired (12, 13) athletes *20: Athletes with an intellectual disability *31–38: Athletes with cerebral palsy *40: Les Autres (others) (including people with dwarfism) *42–46: Amputees *51–58: Athletes with a spinal cord disability The class numbers were given prefixes of "T", "F" and "P" for track, field and pentathlon events, respectively. Yang Liwan (born 18 January 1978) is a Paralympian athlete from China competing mainly in category F54 throwing events. Athletic career Yang made her first appearance at a Summer Paralympics in the 2008 Games in Beijing. She entered both the shot put and javelin throw, finishing seventh and eighth respectively. Four years later she appeared at the 2012 Paralympics in London, winning gold in both the javelin and the shot put. As well as her Paralympic success, Yang has also found success at World Championship level. Marites Domingo Burce (born August 15, 1975) is a Filipino para-athlete who competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. She uses a wheelchair due to her disability which was caused by polio. She competes in discus throw, javelin throw and shot put under the F54 classification. She also took part in the 2011 ASEAN Paragames where she won two gold medals. Ruth Aguilar Fulgencio
Ruth Aguilar Fulgencio (born 3 February 1975) is a Spanish Paralympic athletics competitor who has represented Spain at the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Prior to fracturing her spine in a traffic accident, she represented Spain as a member of the national u-17 handball team. Personal Aguilar was born on 3 February 1975 in Torrent, Valencia, and attended Colegio Público Miguel Hernández. Before fracturing her spine in a car accident in December 1992, she played handball. She represented Spain internationally in handball at the under 17 level. She played club handball as a goalball for Urbana Valencia. As an athlete with a disability, sports she initially tried included swimming, wheelchair basketball and powerlifting. Angela Madsen
Angela Madsen (May 10, 1960June 21, 2020) was an American Paralympian sportswoman in both rowing and track and field. In a long career, Madsen moved from race rowing to ocean challenges before switching in 2011 to athletics, winning a bronze medal in the shot put at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. Madsen and teammate Helen Taylor were the first women to row across the Indian Ocean. She died in June 2020 while attempting a solo row from Los Angeles to Honolulu.
