The men's 4 × 400 metres relay competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom. The event was held at the Olympic Stadium on 9–10 August. It was won by the Bahamas. The qualifying round experienced more drama than is normal in these affairs. In the first heat, on the second leg, Kenya's Vincent Mumo Kiilu was boxed in near the back of the pack, with South Africa's Ofentse Mogawane on his shoulder. Coming into the home straight, Kiilu tried to step to the outside, tripping Mogawane, leaving him injured on the track. The much awaited return of Oscar Pistorius waiting to run the third leg never materialized. South Africa filed a protest in which Kenya was disqualified and South Africa was allowed to run in the final. Conveniently, the London Olympic Stadium track has 9 lanes to accommodate such a circumstance, while normally only 8 lanes are used in Championship meets. Josh Mance
Ronell Joshua "Josh" Mance (born March 21, 1992) is an American sprinter who specialises in the 400 metres. He attends Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, where he has transferred after two years at the University of Southern California. On June 24, 2012, he finished 4th in the 400 meters at the 2012 United States Olympic Trials, a result that won him a position on the United States Olympic team as a member of the 4x400 relay. At the Olympics, Mance was part of the precarious American silver medal winning team. In the semi-finals, Mance took the baton from Manteo Mitchell after Mitchell completed half a lap with what turned out to be a broken leg. The event was won by Kirani James of Grenada, earning the country its first Olympic medal. Luguelín Santos's silver was the Dominican Republic's first medal in the men's 400 metres. Lalonde Gordon's bronze was Trinidad and Tobago's first medal in the event since 1964. Jermaine Gonzales (born 26 November 1984) is a Jamaican 400 metres runner. He is currently being coached by Glen Mills and Bertland Cameron. He had a successful start to international athletics in the young age categories, taking the 400 m bronze at the 2001 World Youth Championships in Athletics and stepping up a level for another bronze at the 2002 World Junior Championships in Athletics. Félix Sánchez, (born August 30, 1977) is a retired Dominican-American track and field athlete. He is of Dominican descent, was born and raised in the United States, and competed for the Dominican Republic, specializing in the 400 meter hurdles. Ofentse Mogawane (born 20 February 1982) is a former South African sprinter who specialized in the 400 meters. Career He finished sixth in the 2006 African Championships. He also competed at the 2005 World Championships and the 2006 Commonwealth Games without reaching the finals. In 2007 Mogawane was found guilty of methylprednisolone doping. The sample was delivered on 22 June 2006 in an in-competition test in Algiers, Algeria. He received a public warning from the IAAF rather than a lengthy ban. Vincent Mumo Kiilu (born 3 August 1982) is a Kenyan sprint runner and hurdler who has competed in the 2008 and the 2012 Olympic Games. He has twice competed at the Commonwealth Games (2006 and 2010), including a relay silver medal on his second appearance. He was selected for Kenya at the World Championships in Athletics in 2003 and 2011. In the 2012 Olympic 4x400 meter relay semifinal heat, Kiilu cut in front of South Africa's Ofentse Mogawane and both runners fell.
