Discus Throw
The discus throw (), also known as disc throw, is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disk (mathematics), disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than their competitors. It is an classical antiquity, ancient sport, as demonstrated by the fifth-century-BC Myron statue ''Discobolus''. Although not part of the current pentathlon, it was one of the events of the Ancient Olympic pentathlon, ancient Greek pentathlon, which can be dated back to at least 708 BC, and it is part of the modern decathlon. History The sport of throwing the discus traces back to it being an event in the Ancient Olympic Games, original Olympic Games of Ancient Greece. Aaron Neighbour
Aaron Neighbour (born 2 December 1977) is a retired Australian discus thrower and shot putter. He finished sixth in the shot put at the Athletics at the 1998 Commonwealth Games – Men's shot put, 1998 Commonwealth Games and eleventh in the discus throw at the Athletics at the 2006 Commonwealth Games – Men's discus throw, 2006 Commonwealth Games where he threw 49.61m. Neighbour became Australian discus champion in 2001. His personal best discus throw was 64.26 metres, achieved in May 2008 in Salinas, California. His personal best shot put was 18.95 metres, achieved in July 1998 in Melbourne. Michael Letterlough
Michael Letterlough (born 26 September 1984) is a Caymanian track and field athlete competing in the hammer throw. After graduating from John Gray High School on Grand Cayman, Letterlough attended Florida International University in Miami and currently trains under the guidance of Anatoliy Bondarchuk in Kamloops, British Columbia. During the course of his athletic career at Florida International, Letterlough won the 2006 Sun Belt Conference championship, set school records in the hammer throw and weight throw and was named Sun Belt Conference athlete of the week. During this time, he also set Cayman national records in the hammer throw, discus throw, and weight throw and served as the captain for the Cayman Islands team at the 2005 Island Games. Shaka Sola
Shaka Sola (born 14 March 1977) is a Samoan shot putter and discus thrower who became a popular if surprising star at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics. Career At the 2005 World Championships in Athletics, Sola arrived late, having missed his flight from Samoa, and did not reach the games until his specialist event (shot put) had completed. As compensation, he asked to be allowed to compete in the javelin, although he had never previously thrown a javelin. Sola finished last in the event by a considerable distance, throwing the javelin 41.18 metres, over 17 metres less than the next worst competitor. He was roundly applauded and supported by the other javelin throwers, however, all of whom were aware of the reasons for his participation in that event. At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, the athletics events were held in Melbourne, Australia from 19 March to 25 March 2006. A total of 47 events were contested, of which 24 by male and 23 by female athletes. Furthermore, three men's and three women's disability events were held within the programme.
