These are the official results of the Women's 4 × 400 m Relay event at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. There were 15 nations competing. In the penultimate race ever in Centennial Stadium, Olabisi Afolabi put Nigeria out in front, with Merlene Frazer very close at the handoff. Fatima Yusuf extended the Nigerian lead out to about 8 metres, Handing off in sixth place, Maicel Malone brought USA into second place, but Russian Svetlana Goncharenko, starting her leg in fifth place, followed Malone and overtook her on the final straight. With Nigeria comfortably in front, the second exchange saw the field bunch as the next six teams exchanged within a couple of steps of one another. Coming out of the scrum, Russia maintained second place followed by USA, while Cuba's Surella Morales found herself flat on her face before the end of the first turn. Grit Breuer
Grit Breuer (later Springstein, born 16 February 1972 in Röbel, Bezirk Neubrandenburg) is a German former athlete, who competed in the women's 200 metres, 400 metres, 4×100 m relay, and 4×400 m relay events. She has received injuries as a result of her sports competition, including a slipped disk in her back and a ligament in her knee. She has also been involved in drugs-related controversy. In 1992 she received a two-year ban from the sport after admitting she had taken clenbuterol. In 2004, she was accused of skipping a drug test in South Africa, but she was cleared on a technicality. She has won two Olympic bronze medals in the 4 × 400 metres relay. Her first was in 1988 competing for East Germany, when she ran in the heats but not the final and the second was in 1996. Olga Kotlyarova (born 12 April 1976 in Sverdlovsk) is a Russian runner. She used to compete mainly in 400 metres, and has an Olympic bronze medal from 2000 in relay. She is also a world champion (indoor and outdoor) in this event. Ana Fidelia Quirot Moré (; born March 23, 1963) is a former track and field athlete from Cuba, who specialised in the 800 metres but was also successful over 400 m. At 800 metres, she is a two-time World Champion (1995, 1997) and a two-time Olympic medallist (1992, 1996). Her best time of 1:54.44 from 1989 still ranks her fifth on the world all-time list. Esther Julia "Daysi" Duporty Torres (born February 9, 1971 in Guantánamo) is a retired sprinter from Cuba, who competed at three consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1992.
