Athletics At The 1984 Summer Olympics – Men's 100 Metres
The men's 100 metres sprint event at the 1984 Olympic Games took place between August 3 and August 4. Eighty-two athletes from 59 countries participated. Each nation was limited to 3 athletes per rules in force since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Carl Lewis of the United States, that nation's first title after two Games of missing the podium (4th in 1976, boycotted in 1980). Canada's Ben Johnson took bronze to break up the Americans' bid to sweep the podium (which they had done in 1904 and 1912); it was Canada's first medal in the event since 1964. Background This was the twentieth time the event was held, having appeared at every Olympics since the first in 1896. Defending gold medal winner Allan Wells of Great Britain was the only finalist from the Moscow Games to return. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (also known as the L.A. Coliseum) is a multi-purpose stadium in the Exposition Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Peter Van Miltenburg (born 16 August 1957 in Geelong, Victoria) is a former Australian sprinter who specialised in the 200 metres. In 1981 he represented Australia/Oceania in the IAAF World Cup in Rome in the 200 metres where he finished 9th. He also ran in both relays that finished 8th. Hasely Crawford
Hasely Joachim Crawford TC (born 16 August 1950) is a former track and field athlete from Trinidad and Tobago. In 1976, he became his country's first Olympic champion. A stadium was renamed in his honour in 2001. Early years Crawford was born in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, one of the eleven children of Lionel Crawford and Phyllis Holder, and began pursuing athletics at the age of 17. He is a six-time Trinidad and Tobago 100 metres champion, and won the 200 metre title in 1976. He debuted internationally in 1970, winning a bronze medal in the 100 metres at the Commonwealth Games. Only two years later, he surprisingly qualified for the 100 metres final of the Olympics in Munich, but pulled his hamstring after 20 metres and failed to finish. Mike McFarlane
Michael Anthony McFarlane OBE (born 2 May 1960) is a retired British athlete who competed mainly in the 100 metres and 200 metres. He won an Olympic silver medal in the 4×100 metres relay at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He was the 200 m gold medallist at the 1982 Commonwealth Games and a 60 metres gold medallist at the 1985 European Athletics Indoor Championships. McFarlane won two further sprint medals at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. Biography He lived in the London Borough of Hackney. He started out as a schoolboy winning the English schoolboys' 200 metres on three occasions. This success continued as he went on to win the AAA's junior Indoor 60/200 metre titles. This was followed by an outdoor AAA's junior 200 victory. He was also a South of England Champion and in 1979/1980 he won the European junior and AAA's Indoor 200 metre titles. Tony Sharpe
Anthony "Tony" Sharpe (born 28 June 1961) is a Jamaican-born Canadian former sprinter who won an Olympic bronze medal in the 4 x 100 metres relay and was a finalist in the 100 metres in Los Angeles 1984. In 1982, he set a Canadian record in the 200 metres with a time of 20.22 and ran his personal best 100 metres time in 10.19 seconds. He also won a silver medal in the 4 x 100 metres relay at the 1982 Commonwealth Games. He competed at the first World Championships in 1983. Coaching career Sharpe was awarded the Gerry Swan Development Coach of the Year Award for 2014 by Athletics Canada. He is the head coach of the Speed Academy Athletics Club based in Pickering, Ontario, which he founded in 2006 after leaving a career in corporate sales.
