Athletics At The 1980 Summer Paralympics
Athletics at the 1980 Summer Paralympics consisted of 275 events. The Games saw 1,973 Para athletes from 43 countries compete in 13 sports. The full list of sports was; archery, Para athletics, dartchery, lawn bowls, goalball, shooting Para sport, Para swimming, table tennis, sitting volleyball, weightlifting, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing and wrestling. The USA and Poland tied for the most gold medals in Arnhem, with USA taking 195 overall medals and Poland finishing with 177. Germany, Canada and Great Britain rounded out the top 5 on the medals chart. Bahamas, Jamaica, Kenya, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Sudan and Zimbabwe won their first ever medals in this competition. Erich Hubel is an Australian Paralympic athlete and wheelchair basketballer. Mel Fitzgerald
Melvin Leo Fitzgerald CM (20 July 1953 – 2 October 2023) was a Canadian Paralympic athlete. Biography Fitzgerald was born in Trepassey, Newfoundland in July 1953. He competed in athletics in the 1980 and 1984 Paralympics, winning eight medals. He used a wheelchair since the age of two, when he was afflicted with polio. Richard Oliver (Paralympian)
Richard Alden Oliver, OAM (born 16 April 1955) is an Australian Paralympic athlete and wheelchair basketball player. He was born in the South Australian town of Gawler. He participated in athletics at both the 1976 Toronto and 1980 Arnhem Paralympics, winning a bronze medal in 1980 in the Men's 100 m 4 event. He held the world records in the 100 m and 200 m events.
