Athletics At The 1980 Summer Olympics – Men's 100 Metres
The men's 100 metres event was one of the events in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. The competition was held on July 24, 1980, and on July 25, 1980. Sixty-five athletes from 40 nations competed. Each nation was limited to 3 athletes per rules in force since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Allan Wells of Great Britain, that nation's first title in the men's 100 metres since 1924. Cuba took its first medal in the event since 1964, with Silvio Leonard's silver matching the nation's best result. Petar Petrov's bronze was Bulgaria's first Olympic medal in the men's 100 metres. Background This was the nineteenth time the event was held, having appeared at every Olympics since the first in 1896. Luzhniki Stadium ( rus, стадион «Лужники», p=stədʲɪˈon lʊʐnʲɪˈkʲi, ''Stadion Luzhniki'') is the national stadium of Russia, located in its capital city, Moscow. Pietro Mennea
Pietro Paolo Mennea (; 28 June 1952 – 21 March 2013), nicknamed ("the Arrow of the South"), was an Italian sprinter and politician. He was most successful in the 200m event, winning a gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, and set a world record at 19.72 seconds in September 1979. This record stood for almost 17 years – the longest duration in the event history – and is still the European record. John Carew (athlete)
John Carew (born 17 September 1952) is a retired sprint runner from Sierra Leone. He competed in the 100 m event at the 1980 Summer Olympics, but failed to reach the final. In 1974 Carew came from Sierra Leone to the Soviet Union to study at the Rostov Institute of Civil Engineering. He married a Russian woman in 1978 in Rostov, and had four children with her: Olah, Willy, Victor and Katerina Keyru Katerina Johnovna Keyru (russian: Катерина Джоновна Кейру; later Novoseltseva, russian: Новосельцева; born 4 December 1988) is a Russian basketball shooting guard.
