Athletics At The 1972 Summer Olympics – Women's 1500 Metres
These are the official results of the Women's 1500 metres event at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. The competition was held on 4 of September & 9 of September. This was the first time this distance was held for women at the Olympics. Lyudmila Bragina had just set the world record a month and a half earlier, knocking two and a half seconds off of Karin Burneleit's previous record. Burneleit was in the field, as were previous record holders Jaroslava Jehličková and Paola Pigni. In the first heat, Bragina improved upon her world record by .4. A step behind her, seventeen year old Glenda Reiser set the world junior record, also running faster than the world record at the start of that race. Kick (running)
A kick in a running race is the ability of some athletes to sprint at the end of an endurance-oriented race. For those who possess the ability to kick, it is a strategic weapon. For those with the liability not to possess a kick, they must seek different strategies to anticipate and diminish their opponent's kicking power, usually by a long extended surge to break away or exhaust their opponent well ahead of the finish of the race. Similar to a Sprinter in cycling, a kicker has a finite distance they know they are able to sprint, making their strategy to be in the ideal position at that distance to be able to utilize that speed. Sprinting too early could lead an athlete to tie up, a form of muscle cramp that debilitates a racer from continuing to kick. Vera Nikolić
Vera Nikolić (Serbian Cyrillic: Вера Николић; 23 September 1948 – 28 June 2021) was a Serbian middle-distance runner, who competed at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics, and later coach. She had her best achievements in the 800 m event, in which she won European titles in 1966 and 1971 and set a world record, 2:00.5, on 20 July 1968 holding it until 11 July 1971. She came to the 1968 Olympics as a favorite, but due to the pressure of being the favorite she gave up her semifinal – after leading it for 300 m she suddenly stepped off the track, walked back to the start, sat down and took off her shoes. She set her personal best in 800 m in finishing fifth in the final at 1972 Olympics. Grete Waitz
Grete Waitz (, 1 October 195319 April 2011) was a Norwegian marathon runner and former world record holder. In 1979, at the New York City Marathon, she became the first woman in history to run the marathon in under two and a half hours. Waitz won nine New York City Marathons, women's division, between 1978 and 1988, the highest number of victories in a single big city marathon in history. She won the silver medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and a gold medal at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki. Thelma Wright
Thelma Wright (née Fynn; born 9 October 1951) is a Canadian middle-distance runner. She competed in the 1500 metres at the 1972 Summer Olympics and the 1976 Summer Olympics. In 1970, Wright won a bronze medal at the World Cross Country Championships in France, and a bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh at 1500 metres. In 1973, she won another bronze medal at the 1973 Pacific Conference Games in Toronto, in the 1500 metres, as well as at the Commonwealth Games in 1974, over the same distance. In 1975, she won a silver medal in the 3000 metres at the World Student Games in Rome, setting a Canadian Record of 8:54.94, which would ranked her 5th for the year. Francie Kraker Goodridge
Francea ("Francie") Norma Kraker Goodridge (born February 9, 1947 in Ann Arbor, Michigan) is a former women's track and field athlete and coach from the United States. She set a world record in the 600-yard indoor event and was the first Michigan-born woman to win a place on the U.S. Olympic team ( Mexico City in 1968 and Munich in 1972). She later coached women's track at the University of Michigan, Wake Forest University and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where she was also the Coordinator of Women's Athletics. Marijke Moser, née Van de Graaf (born 1946) is a former Dutch-born Swiss middle and long distance runner.. She has campaigned for women to enter races on the same terms as men. She was the first woman to run a marathon in under three hours. Life From the age of five to twelve, Marijke van de Graaf lived with her parents in Indonesia, where her father was physician. In 1970 she married Albrecht Moser who was a member of the same athletics club as her in Hilversum in the Netherlands, after which the couple moved to Bern. Moser campaigned for the right of women to run in all raceson equal terms to men. She managed to participate in the male-only Morat-Freiburg race in 1971 as a "clandestine" entry. Joan Florence Page-Allison OBE (born 10 June 1947) is a retired British international middle-distance runner. Athletics career She competed in the women's 800 metres at the 1968 Summer Olympics. She represented England and won a silver medal in the 1,500 metres, at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland.
