Athletics At The 1972 Summer Olympics – Men's Long Jump
The men's long jump event at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich was held on 8 & 9 of September. Thirty-six athletes from 25 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Randy Williams of the United States, the nation's second consecutive and 15th overall gold medal in the men's long jump. Hans Baumgartner earned West Germany's first medal in the event (Germany had taken silver in 1936). Background This was the 17th appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. Gábor Katona (born 1 October 1952) is a retired Hungarian triple jumper. He won the bronze medal at the 1970 European Junior Championships and finished fourth at the 1979 European Indoor Championships. He became the Hungarian triple jump champion in 1972, 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1983, rivalling with Henrik Kalocsai, Zoltán Cziffra and Béla Bakosi. Bruce Field (athlete)
Bruce William Field (born 22 January 1947) is an Australian former athlete who competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics and won a silver medal at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games. He specialised in sprint races, hurdles and the long jump. Field was born in Melbourne and trained at St. Stephens Harriers in Mount Waverley. Career At the 1972 Summer Olympics he took part in both the long jump and 400 metres hurdles. The only Australian in the long jump competition, he finished in 15th position with a leap of 7.76m, finishing 3 cm short of a place in the final. He was in the fourth heat for the 400 metres hurdles, which was won by eventual gold medalist John Akii-Bua. Field placed fourth and was eliminated from the competition. In 1974 he was the national champion in the 400 metres hurdles and in the same year won a silver medal in the 400 metres hurdles event, behind England's Alan Pascoe, at the British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch.
