Athletics At The 1956 Summer Olympics – Men's Hammer Throw
The men's hammer throw was an event at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. The qualifying round and the final both were held on Saturday November 24, 1956. There were 22 competitors from 14 nations. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by American Hal Connolly, the nation's first victory in the event since 1924 and seventh overall. Mikhail Krivonosov (silver) and Anatoli Samotsvetov (bronze) earned the Soviet Union's first medals in the event. Background This was the 12th appearance of the event, which has been held at every Summer Olympics except 1896. Guy Husson
Guy Husson (born March 2, 1931) is a retired French track and field athlete known primarily for the hammer throw. He was born in Vitry-sur-Seine, Val-de-Marne, France. He represented his native country in three Olympics from 1956 to 1964. He was a finalist in 1956, finishing in 13th place. He also represented France at the 1954 and 1958 European Athletics Championships; and the 1955 and 1963 Mediterranean Games. He set his personal best of 69.40 at a home meet in Aix les Bains at the age of 36. The throw turned out to be a Masters M35 World Record, which stood for almost two years until it was surpassed by the same Hal Connolly who took the gold medal in 1956. Birger Asplund
Karl Birger Asplund (21 July 1929 – 1 July 2023) was a Swedish hammer thrower. He represented his native country at the 1956, 1960, and 1964 Olympics with the best result of 21st place in 1964. Albert William "Al" Hall (August 2, 1934 – October 9, 2008) was an American hammer throw champion, who competed in the Olympics on four occasions. Early life Hall grew up on the family's farm in Hanson, Massachusetts, where he built up his physique using a set of weights he had constructed from concrete cylinders. Hall attended Whitman High School (now part of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School), where he was a running back on the school's football team and became an active participant on the track team during his senior year. Hall graduated from the school in 1952. Tadeusz Rut (11 October 1931 – 27 March 2002) was a Polish athlete. He competed at the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympics in the hammer throw and won a bronze medal in 1960. In 1956 he also finished 17th in the discus throw and was selected as the Olympic flag bearer for Poland. At the European championships he won a gold medal in 1958 setting a new continental record.
