Athletics At The 1924 Summer Olympics – Men's Long Jump
The men's long jump event was part of the Athletics at the 1924 Summer Olympics, track and field athletics programme at the 1924 Summer Olympics. The competition was held on Tuesday, July 8, 1924. 34 long jumpers from 21 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation was 4. The event was won by DeHart Hubbard of the United States, the nation's sixth title in the event (having not won only at the 1920 Games). Sverre Hansen (athlete), Sverre Hansen won Norway's first long jump medal with the bronze. Background This was the seventh appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. The only returning finalist from the 1920 Games was fifth-place finisher Erling Aastad of Norway. The favorite was DeHart Hubbard of the United States, the 1922–1924 AAU champion and winner of the U.S. Olympic trials. Richard Honner
Richard St John Honner (30 November 1897 – 10 November 1962) was an Australian surgeon, gynaecologist, obstetrician and an Olympic athlete. Early life and athletics Born in Maitland, South Australia his family moved when he was a child to Junee, New South Wales.Honner was educated at St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill. While studying medicine at the University of Sydney, Honner trained as a hurdler and long-jumper and was selected for the 1924 Paris Olympics. He finished in overall equal fourteenth place in the long jump and placed third in his heat in the 400m and did not progress. Before he left Australia he set an Australian long jump record which stood for 27 years. While conducting his medical post-graduate qualifications in England, Honner continued to compete in track and field. Silvio Cator
Sylvio or Silvio Paul Cator (October 19, 1900 – July 21, 1952) was a Haitian athlete most successful in the long jump. Biography Born in Cavaillon, Haiti, Cator was a footballer who played for the Trivoli Athletic Club and the Racing Club Haïtien. He participated in the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris in the high jump, where he finished 15th, and the long jump, where he came in 12th. In the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam he won a silver medal in the long jump. His 7.58 m effort was 16 cm short of gold ( Edward Hamm). A month later, on September 9, 1928, Sylvio Cator broke Edward Hamm's two-month-old world record with a 7.93 m jump at the 1924 Olympic stadium near Paris. He participated one more time in the long jump at the 1932 games in Los Angeles, where he took the 9th place.
