Athletics At The 1924 Summer Olympics – Men's 200 Metres
The men's 200 metres event was part of the track and field athletics programme at the 1924 Summer Olympics. The first two rounds were held on 8 July, with the semifinals and final on 9 July. Sixty-five sprinters from 33 countries competed. Nations were limited to 4 athletes each. The event was won by Jackson Scholz of the United States, the nation's third consecutive victory in the event and fifth in six Games. For the third straight Games, the podium consisted of two Americans winning gold and silver (Charley Paddock) and a Brit taking bronze (Eric Liddell). Paddock, the silver medalist in 1920 as well, was the second man to earn multiple medals in the 200 metres. Background This was the sixth appearance of the event, which was not held at the first Olympics in 1896 but has been on the program ever since. Henricus Broos
Henricus Adrianus "Harry" Broos (25 May 1898 – 16 July 1954) was a Dutch sprinter, who competed in the 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 4 × 100 m and 4 × 400 m events at the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics. He won a bronze medal in the 4 × 100 m relay in 1924 and failed to reach the finals on all other occasions. Arthur Porritt, Baron Porritt
Colonel Arthur Espie Porritt, Baron Porritt, (10 August 1900 – 1 January 1994) was a New Zealand physician, military surgeon, statesman and athlete. He won a bronze medal at the 1924 Summer Olympics in the 100 m sprint. He served as the 11th governor-general of New Zealand from 1967 to 1972. Early life Porritt was born in Wanganui, New Zealand, the son of Ivy Elizabeth Porritt (née McKenzie) and Ernest Edward Porritt, a doctor. His mother died in 1914 during his first year at the Wanganui Collegiate School, and his father left soon after to serve in World War I. He became a keen athlete. In 1920 he began studying towards a medical degree at the University of Otago where he was a resident at Selwyn College and President of the Selwyn College Students' Association. In 1923 Porritt was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, and he studied medicine from 1924 to 1926 at Magdalen College, Oxford. Herminio Ahumada (7 October 1899 – 1 July 1983) was a Mexican politician and former sprinter who competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics. He later served as a federal deputy in the XXXIX Legislature of the Mexican Congress, where he was the President of the Chamber of Deputies in 1944.
