Athletics At The 1920 Summer Olympics – Men's 5000 Metres
The men's 5000 metres event was part of the track and field athletics programme at the 1920 Summer Olympics. The competition was held on Monday, August 16, 1920, and on Tuesday, August 17, 1920. Thirty-eight runners from 16 nations competed. Competition format The competition consisted of two rounds. First four semifinals were held of 9 to 10 runners with the top four in each heat advancing. The final race was then held the next day with 16 competitors. Records These were the standing world and Olympic records (in minutes) prior to the 1920 Summer Olympics. The () or Kielstadion () was built as the main stadium for the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp. Lucien Duquesne
Eléonor Lucien Ernest Duquesne (17 October 1900 – 7 May 1991) was a French runner who competed at three Olympic Games. Career Duquesne competed in the 3000 metres – 10,000 metres events at the 1920, 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics. His best achievements were fourth place in the team 3000 m event in 1920 and 1924 and sixth place in the 3000 m steeplechase in 1928. In the first laps of the 1928 steeplechase semifinal, Paavo Nurmi fell at the water jump, and Duquesne stopped and helped him out. In return, Nurmi paced Duquesne through the rest of the race, thereby helping him to reach the final. Duquesne competed at the International Cross Country Championships in 1920 and 1923, finishing seventh on both occasions and winning two medals with the French team. He finished third behind Albert Hill in the 1 mile event at the British 1921 AAA Championships. Horace Hallock "Hal" Brown (March 30, 1898 – December 25, 1983) was an American long-distance runner. He competed for the United States in the 1920 Summer Olympics held in Antwerp, Belgium in the 3000 meter team race where he won the gold medal together with his teammates Arlie Schardt and Ivan Dresser. Brown won the 1916 New England Intercollegiate Cross Country meet leading Williams College to the team title. After serving in World War I, he won the two miles at the 1920 IC4A championships in 9:27.6, establishing a Williams College record that stood until 1973. Charles Edward Blewitt (1 November 1895 – 30 May 1954), also known as Joe Blewitt was a British runner, who competed for Great Britain at the 1920 Summer Olympics and 1928 Summer Olympics. Career Blewitt won Midland Championships over distances ranging from 880 yd to 10 miles. He was English national and international champion in cross-country running. Blewitt became the National 10 miles champion after winning the AAA Championships title at the 1919 AAA Championships. Blewitt became the National 4 mile champion after winning the AAA Championships title at the 1920 AAA Championships. The following month at the 1920 Olympic Games held in Antwerp, Belgium, he finished fifth in the 3000 metres and 5000 metres, earning a silver medal in the 3000 metres team event.
