The men's 110 metres hurdles was the shorter of two hurdling events at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. It was dominated by the American runners. The competition was held from Thursday, July 23, 1908, to Saturday, July 25, 1908. 25 hurdlers from ten nations competed. NOCs could enter up to 12 athletes.Official report, p. 32. The event was won by Forrest Smithson of the United States, the fourth of five consecutive victories for the nation in the first five Olympic Games. It was also the third of four consecutive podium sweeps for the Americans in the event. Background This was the fourth appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. None of the hurdlers from 1904 returned. White City Stadium
White City Stadium was a stadium located in White City, London, England. Built for the 1908 Summer Olympics, it hosted the finish of the first modern marathon and other sports like swimming, speedway, boxing, show jumping, athletics, stock car racing, concerts and a match at the 1966 World Cup. From 1927, it was a venue for greyhound racing, hosting the English Greyhound Derby until its closure in 1984. The stadium was demolished in 1985 and the site is now occupied by White City Place. History Designed by the engineer J. J. Webster and completed in 10 months by George Wimpey, on part of the site of the Franco-British Exhibition, this stadium with a seating capacity of 68,000 was opened by King Edward VII on 27 April 1908 after the first stanchion had been placed in position by Lady Desborough on 2 August 1907. Tim Ahearne
Timothy Joseph Ahearne (17 August 1885 – 12 December 1968) was an Irish track and field athlete who competed for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in the 1908 Summer Olympics. He was born in Dirreen, Athea, Limerick and was the older brother of Dan Ahearn, the world record holder of the triple jump from 1909–1920. Ahearne won the gold medal in the triple jump at the 1908 Summer Olympics held in London, while representing Great Britain and Ireland (as Ireland was not recognised separately at the time by the International Olympic Committee). He finished eight in the long jump competition and also participated in the standing long jump event but his result is unknown. In the 110 metre hurdles competition he was eliminated in the semi-finals. After his Olympic victory in 1908, Ahearne emigrated to New York in 1909, and joined the Irish American Athletic Club. William Knyvett (athlete)
William Alexander Knyvett (May 28, 1882 – February 13, 1929) was a British track and field athlete who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics. He was born in Jessore, British Raj, modern-day Bangladesh. He was the son of A. V. Knyvett CIE and he followed in his father's footsteps as a member of the Bengali Police. Kenneth Powell (tennis)
Kenneth Powell (8 April 1885 – 18 February 1915) was a British athlete and tennis player who competed in the 1908 and the 1912 Summer Olympics as well as at the Wimbledon Championships. Tennis Powell studied at Cambridge University and was a member of the 1905 Cambridge University Lawn Tennis Club which was captained by Tony Wilding. Powell became team captain in 1906 and 1907. In 1908 he won the singles title at the Queen's Club Championships when his opponent in the final Major Ritchie retired in the second set. That year he also won the Covered Court Championships in Sweden. Between 1905 and 1913 Powell competed in eight editions of the Wimbledon Championships. In the singles his best result was achieved during his last visit in 1913 when he defeated one of the favourites CP Dixon in the fourth round in five sets. William Rand (athlete)
William McNear Rand (April 7, 1886 – October 5, 1981) was an American track and field athlete and businessman. He competed at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. He was born in Watertown, Massachusetts and died in Lincoln, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard University. Rand won his first-round heat of the 110 metre hurdles with a time of 15.8 seconds, breaking away from his competitors at the ninth hurdle. The ninth hurdle was again the place where Rand made his winning move in the second round, and he finished in 15.8 seconds there as well. This made him one of the four runners to advance to the final of the 110 metre hurdles. There, he finished fourth in a time of 16.0 seconds. Rand later became president of Monsanto Chemical Corporation, succeeded by Charles Allen Thomas in 1951.
