100 Metres
The 100 metres, or 100-meter dash, is a sprint race in track and field competitions. The shortest common outdoor running distance, the dash is one of the most popular and prestigious events in the sport of athletics. It has been contested at the Summer Olympics since 1896 for men and since 1928 for women. The inaugural World Championships were in 1983. The reigning 100 m Olympic or world champion is often named "the fastest man or woman in the world". Fred Kerley and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce are the reigning world champions; Marcell Jacobs and Elaine Thompson-Herah are the men's and women's Olympic champions. On an outdoor 400-metre running track, the 100 m is held on the home straight, with the start usually being set on an extension to make it a straight-line race. Oluwasegun Makinde (born 6 July 1991) is a Nigeria-born Canadian athlete competing in sprinting events. Born in Maiduguri, Nigeria, Makinde moved with his family to Canada in 1992. He was an unused relay member at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He won the gold medal in the 200 metres at the 2013 Jeux de la Francophonie. In July 2016, he was named to Canada's Olympic team. Gabriel Oliveira Constantino (born 9 February 1995) is a Brazilian hurdler. He is the current South American record holder in the 110m hurdles, with a time of 13.18. Constantino finished 6th in the men's 60 metres hurdles at the 2018 IAAF World Indoor Championships. He advanced to the final on time, being the second fastest and final non-automatic qualifier. To qualify for the championships, he equaled at national and South American record of 7.60 seconds. In 2018, in France, he broke the South American record of 110m hurdles, with a time of 13.23. Ján Volko (born 2 November 1996) is a Slovak sprinter. He competed in the 60 metres at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships. His biggest successes to date are: the silver medal at the 2017 European Indoor Championships with a new national record of 6.58, the gold medal at the 2019 European Indoor Championships, and the bronze medal at the 2021 European Indoor Championships.
