Athletics At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's Pole Vault
The women's pole vault competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event was held at the Olympic Stadium between 16–19 August. Summary It took a clean round to 4.55 m to qualify. Holly Bradshaw, Lisa Ryzih, Jennifer Suhr, Eliza McCartney, Yarisley Silva and Martina Strutz already had misses and had to jump 4.60. All but Strutz did it on their first attempt. Ekaterini Stefanidi had passed the lower heights and took her only attempt at 4.60, which was successful to qualify. In the final, 4.60 proved to be the end of the line as both returning Olympic medalists from 2012, Suhr and Silva topped out. They left tied with one miss each. 2012 bronze medalist Yelena Isinbayeva did not return because Russia's athletics team was suspended from international competition, after which Isinbayeva announced her retirement. Angelica Bengtsson
Angelica Therese Bengtsson (born 8 July 1993) is a Swedish track and field athlete who specialises in the pole vault. She became the first pole vault winner at the inaugural Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore, 2010. Bengtsson has won gold medals at the 2009 World Youth Championships and the 2010 World Junior Championships in Athletics. She set a mark of 4.47 m for the youth world record for the event in 2010 and broke the world junior record with a vault of 4.63 m in 2011. Bengtsson placed tied 4th at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, China, having set a national record of 4.70 m in the final. She set a then-national record with 4.81 m, set indoor in Clermont-Ferrand, on February 24, 2019. Bengtsson has won eleven national titles. Minna Nikkanen
Minna Marianne Nikkanen (born 9 April 1988, in Somero) is a Finnish pole vaulter. Her personal best vault is 4.60 metres (national record), achieved in August 2015 in Kuortane. Nikkanen won gold medal in 2007 European Junior Championships (4.35 metres) and silver medal in 2009 European U23 Championships (4.45 metres). Tina Šutej
Tina Šutej (born 7 November 1988) is a Slovenian pole vaulter. She won bronze medals at the 2022 World Indoor Championships and 2022 European Championships. Šutej earned a silver at the 2021 European Indoor Championships and again in 2023. She took silver at the 2006 World Junior Championships. Šutej is the Slovenian record holder both in and outdoors. Career Šutej was born in Ljubljana and began competing in athletics at an early age, practising in a variety of events from the age of seven. Kelsie Elizabet Ahbe (born July 6, 1991 in Akron, Ohio) is an American-born Canadian pole vaulter. Kelsie placed 12th at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, coached by Tim Mack, 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist. Kelsie competed in the 2017 and 2019 World Championships. She was coached by Jim Bemiller in 2019. He coached Tim Mack and Lawrence Johnson, among others. At the 2010 World Junior Championships in Athletics she finished 7th competing for the United States. Domestically, she won the Canadian national championship in 2015. She took silver at the 2015 NACAC Championships in Athletics and finished 5th at the 2015 Pan American Games. She has the third best jump in Canadian woman's history. She has been an Olympic and World champion, has been ranked #1 in the World, has been the #1 American pole vaulter since 2006, and has won a total of 17 US National Championships (7 Indoor, 10 Outdoor).
