2014 Commonwealth Games
The 2014 Commonwealth Games ( gd, Geamannan a' Cho-fhlaitheis 2014), officially known as the XX Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Glasgow 2014, ( sco, Glesca 2014 or Glesga 2014; gd, Glaschu 2014), was an international multi-sport event celebrated in the tradition of the Commonwealth Games as governed by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). It took place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 3 August 2014. Glasgow was selected as the host city on 9 November 2007 during CGF General Assembly in Colombo, Sri Lanka, defeating Abuja, Nigeria. It was the largest multi-sport event ever held in Scotland with around 4,950 athletes from 71 different nations and territories competing in 18 different sports, outranking the 1970 and 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. Mathew Sagwe (born 2 July 1988) is a Kenyan track and field athlete who competes in the high jump. He holds a personal best of , which is the Kenyan record for the event. He reached international level in 2012 and competed in two events at the African Championship where he reached the high jump podium with a jump of , taking the bronze medal. In 2014 he competed at the 2014 African Championships in Athletics and 2014 Commonwealth Games without reaching the podium. Brandon Starc (born 24 November 1993) is a professional Australian high jumper. Starc currently trains in Sydney, Australia, under the guidance of his coach Alex Stewart. As a national representative and high achieving athlete, Starc is supported and represented through the New South Wales and Australian Institutes of Sport. As a 16 year old he won a silver medal at the inaugural 2010 Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore with a +9 cm personal best of 2.19m. Donald Thomas (born 1 July 1984) is a Bahamian high jumper from Freeport, Bahamas. Biography Thomas initially played basketball at Bishop Michael Eldon School in Freeport Bahamas, before taking up high jump in January 2006 while studying at Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Missouri, where he played on the University's basketball team. He tried high jump for the first time when challenged by members of the track and field team, who were reacting to his claims about his ability to slam dunk. Thomas cleared 6'6" (1.98 m) on his first attempt and 7' (2.13 m) on his third ever jump. The athletes then sought the head track coach Lane Lohr, who entered Thomas in a meet two days later at Eastern Illinois University. At the meet he cleared 7'3.25" (2.22 m), on his seventh-ever jump. Thomas ("Tom") Martin Parsons (born 5 May 1984 in Birmingham, United Kingdom) is a British athlete competing in high jump. Parsons finished 20th in the 2003 European Juniors, 17th in the 2005 European U23 championships, 10th in the 2005 World University Games, 11th at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and 10th in the World Championships at Osaka. Martyn John Bernard (born 15 December 1984 in Wakefield, United Kingdom) is a British athlete, competing in high jump. Bernard has won a silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and a bronze medal in the 2007 European Athletics Indoor Championships. In Osaka in 2007 he set an outdoor best of 2.29 in qualifying, and in the final after clearing 2.21 passed all the way up to 2.33, where he failed twice at 2.35.
