Shot Put
The shot put is a track and field event involving "putting" (throwing) a heavy spherical ball—the ''shot''—as far as possible. The shot put competition for men has been a part of the modern Olympics since their revival in 1896, and women's competition began in 1948. History Homer mentions competitions of rock throwing by soldiers during the Siege of Troy but there is no record of any dead weights being thrown in Greek competitions. The first evidence for stone- or weight-throwing events were in the Scottish Highlands, and date back to approximately the first century. In the 16th century King Henry VIII was noted for his prowess in court competitions of weight and hammer throwing. The first events resembling the modern shot put likely occurred in the Middle Ages when soldiers held competitions in which they hurled cannonballs. Shaka Sola (born 14 March 1977) is a Samoan shot putter and discus thrower who became a popular if surprising star at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics. Career At the 2005 World Championships in Athletics, Sola arrived late, having missed his flight from Samoa, and did not reach the games until his specialist event (shot put) had completed. As compensation, he asked to be allowed to compete in the javelin, although he had never previously thrown a javelin. Sola finished last in the event by a considerable distance, throwing the javelin 41.18 metres, over 17 metres less than the next worst competitor. He was roundly applauded and supported by the other javelin throwers, however, all of whom were aware of the reasons for his participation in that event. Muhammad Ashraf Ali ( bn, মুহম্মদ আশরাফ আলী) was an Awami League politician and the former Member of Parliament of Sylhet-6. He was a former president of Sylhet District Awami League and part of the last District Awami League Advisory Council. Clay Cross (born 26 November 1977 in Sydney) is an Australian shot putter. He won the Australian championships in 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2005. Cross trained at the Randwick-Botany Little Athletics Club. He attended Waverley College. In 1994, he won the Australian championships in the under-18 category; in the same year, he won silver in the 1994 World School Sport Games; and he was awarded bronze in the 1996 World Junior Championships in Athletics. At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, the athletics events were held in Melbourne, Australia from 19 March to 25 March 2006. A total of 47 events were contested, of which 24 by male and 23 by female athletes. Furthermore, three men's and three women's disability events were held within the programme. Scott Rider (born 22 September 1977) is a British bobsledder, shot putter and Highland games competitor. Biography Rider joined the British bobsleigh team in 2000, and he competed in the four man event at the 2002 Winter Olympics, where he and his team-mates finished 11th. In shot putting, Rider represented England at three Commonwealth Games, in 2006, 2010 and 2014, finishing in the top ten in all three tournaments. He was also British outdoor champion in the shot put in 2014 and British indoor champion in 2003 and 2013. He is a member of Birchfield Harriers athletics club. Vikas Shive Gowda (born 5 July 1983) is an Indian discus thrower and shot putter. Born in Mysore, he grew up in Frederick, Maryland in the United States. His father, Shive Gowda, coached the 1988 Indian Olympic track team. Vikas Gowda is a Padma Shri awardee in 2017. He is an alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the 2006 US NCAA National Champion in discus. His personal best throw is 66.28 meters which is also Indian national record in discus throw, achieved in 2012.
