Discus Throw
The discus throw (), also known as disc throw, is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disk (mathematics), disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than their competitors. It is an classical antiquity, ancient sport, as demonstrated by the fifth-century-BC Myron statue ''Discobolus''. Although not part of the current pentathlon, it was one of the events of the Ancient Olympic pentathlon, ancient Greek pentathlon, which can be dated back to at least 708 BC, and it is part of the modern decathlon. History The sport of throwing the discus traces back to it being an event in the Ancient Olympic Games, original Olympic Games of Ancient Greece. The discus as a sport was resurrected in Magdeburg, Germany, by gymnastics teacher Christian Georg Kohlrausch and his students in the 1870s. Aaron Neighbour
Aaron Neighbour (born 2 December 1977) is a retired Australian discus thrower and shot putter. He finished sixth in the shot put at the Athletics at the 1998 Commonwealth Games – Men's shot put, 1998 Commonwealth Games and eleventh in the discus throw at the Athletics at the 2006 Commonwealth Games – Men's discus throw, 2006 Commonwealth Games where he threw 49.61m. Neighbour became Australian discus champion in 2001. His personal best discus throw was 64.26 metres, achieved in May 2008 in Salinas, California. His personal best shot put was 18.95 metres, achieved in July 1998 in Melbourne. Aaron's sister Gabrielle Neighbour has won three senior national titles in Hammer Throw, and represented Australia three times in that event at the Commonwealth Games. References External links
