Athletics At The 2006 Commonwealth Games – Men's 400 Metres
The 400 metres at the 2006 Commonwealth Games as part of the athletics programme were held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from Monday 20 March to Wednesday 22 March 2006. The top two runners in each of the eight heats automatically qualified for the semifinals. The next eight fastest runners from across the heats also qualified. Those 24 runners competed in 3 semifinals, with the top two runners from each and next two fastest qualifying for the final. 2006 Commonwealth Games
The 2006 Commonwealth Games, officially the XVIII Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Melbourne 2006 (Boonwurrung/Woiwurrung: ''Narrm 2006'' or ''Naarm 2006''), was an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth held in Melbourne, Australia between 15 and 26 March 2006. It was the fourth time Australia had hosted the Commonwealth Games. It was also the largest sporting event to be staged in Melbourne, eclipsing the 1956 Summer Olympics in terms of the number of teams competing, athletes competing, and events being held. More than 4,000 athletes from 71 Commonwealth Games Associations took part in the event. Zimbabwe withdrew its membership from the Commonwealth of Nations and Commonwealth Games Federation on 8 December 2003 and so did not participate in the event. James Godday
James Godday (born 9 January 1984) is a Nigerian athlete who specializes in 400 metres. He was born in Kaduna. Godday was a part of the Nigerian team that won the bronze medal in the 2004 Olympics 4 x 400 metres relay. In the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki, he competed in 400 metres where he was knocked out in the semi-finals with 46.62. He achieved a personal best in the heats with 45.30. He later improved this to 44.99 seconds, in February 2006 in Abuja. Sanjay Claude Ayre (born 19 June 1980 in Kingston, Jamaica) is a retired Jamaican sprinter who specialized in the 400 meters. Ayre won a silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games. Ayre is a 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championship Gold medalist and a three-time World Outdoor Championship medalist. During an international athletic career that spanned 15 years, Ayre has won eleven gold, three silver, and four bronze medals at both the junior and senior levels. Michael Blackwood (born 29 August 1976 in Clarendon) is a Jamaican male track and field athlete, who specialized in the 400 meters, his personal best being 44.60 set during his win at the 2002 IAAF World Cup. He was chosen as the Jamaica Sportsman of the Year in 2002, in that same year he was the world number one rank by IAAF in the 400 meters. Tyler Christopher (born October 3, 1983 in Chilliwack, British Columbia) is a former Canadian sprinter who specialized in 400 meters. He is the Canadian record holder for the distance in both indoor and outdoor competition. In 2004 he won the NACAC U23 Championships. The following year he competed in 400 meters at the World Championships in Helsinki and won a bronze medal, setting a new national record of 44.44 seconds. His personal best in the 200 meters event is 20.49 s, also achieved in 2005. Christopher's return to the World Championships in 2007 saw him finish sixth in the 400 m. Timothy Benjamin
Timothy David Benjamin (born 2 May 1982) is a former professional athlete from Wales. He specialised in the 400 metres, and in his teens was coached by Jock Anderson, in the same training group as Christian Malcolm. He then moved to live in Slough to be coached by Tony Lester; Marlon Devonish amongst others was one of his training partners. As a youngster, he ran over 200 metres, and won several junior titles, including the World Youth Championship in 1999. Soon after, he began to concentrate on the 400 m, and was selected for the relay squad at the World Championships in Athletics in Edmonton in 2001. By 2002 he had established himself as one of Britain's best athletes, winning the British AAA title, and running in the successful Team GB squad at the European Cup.
