Shot Put
The shot put is a track and field event involving "putting" (throwing) a heavy spherical ball—the ''shot''—as far as possible. The shot put competition for men has been a part of the modern Olympics since their revival in 1896, and women's competition began in 1948. History Homer mentions competitions of rock throwing by soldiers during the Siege of Troy but there is no record of any dead weights being thrown in Greek competitions. The first evidence for stone- or weight-throwing events were in the Scottish Highlands, and date back to approximately the first century. In the 16th century King Henry VIII was noted for his prowess in court competitions of weight and hammer throwing. The first events resembling the modern shot put likely occurred in the Middle Ages when soldiers held competitions in which they hurled cannonballs. Helena Sofia Engman (born 16 June 1976 in Piteå) is a Swedish shot putter. She finished sixth at the 2003 Summer Universiade and eighth at the 2007 European Indoor Championships. Tereapii Tapoki (born 9 April 1984 in Mauke) is a female discus thrower from the Cook Islands. At age twenty, Tapoki made her official debut for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, where she competed in the women's discus throw. She placed fortieth in the qualifying rounds of the competition, with a throw of 48.12 metres. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Tapoki improved her performance by successfully throwing the discus into the field on her third and final attempt, at 48.35 metres. Kate Elizabeth Forbes is a Scottish politician who has served as Cabinet Secretary for Finance and the Economy since 2020. A member of the Scottish National Party (SNP), she has been the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch constituency since 2016. Career Mikhnevich finished third at the 2000 World Junior Championships, but first appeared on the international athletics scene at the 2004 Olympics, where she finished fifth.
