Discus Throw
The discus throw (), also known as disc throw, is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disk (mathematics), disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than their competitors. It is an classical antiquity, ancient sport, as demonstrated by the fifth-century-BC Myron statue ''Discobolus''. Although not part of the current pentathlon, it was one of the events of the Ancient Olympic pentathlon, ancient Greek pentathlon, which can be dated back to at least 708 BC, and it is part of the modern decathlon. History The sport of throwing the discus traces back to it being an event in the Ancient Olympic Games, original Olympic Games of Ancient Greece. The discus as a sport was resurrected in Magdeburg, Germany, by gymnastics teacher Christian Georg Kohlrausch and his students in the 1870s. Athletics At The 2002 Commonwealth Games
At the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the athletics events were held at the City of Manchester Stadium on 26–30 July 2002. The route for the marathon event crossed Manchester city centre and finished in the stadium. The race walk events began alongside the Lowry Centre at Salford Quays. There were twenty-five men's events and 23 women's events; the schedules were identical except that there were men's 3000 metres steeplechase and 50 kilometres walk events. Pole vaulter Dominic Johnson won a bronze medal, Saint Lucia's only medal of the Games. Sixteen Games records were bettered over the course of the competition, and two further records were set in the disability events. Beatrice Faumuina
Beatrice Roini Liua Faumuina (born 23 October 1974 in Auckland, New Zealand) is a former New Zealand discus thrower. Career Faumuina was a gold medallist at the 1997 World Championships in Athletics. She has represented New Zealand in four Summer Olympics. After winning the discus event at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester she was featured on a stamp from Samoa. She is currently New Zealand's Trade Commissioner and Consul General, New York. At the 2004 Summer Olympics she placed 7th in the discus with a throw of 64.45 metres. Early in her career, she was coached by Les Mills, discus gold medallist at the 1966 Commonwealth Games. In the 2005 Queen's Birthday Honours, Faumuina was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to athletics. Neelam Jaswant Singh
Neelam Jaswant Singh (born 8 January 1971 in Farmana) is an Indian discus thrower. Her personal best throw is 64.55 metres, achieved at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan. During the 2005 World Championships she tested positive for the banned stimulant pemoline in an in-competition test. In the year 1998, Neelam Jaswant Singh won the bronze medal at the Bangkok Asian Games. In the Kosanova International Athlete Meet held at Almaty (Kazakhstan), Neelam J. Singh has to her credit a gold medal performance. In August 2000, she also won a gold medal at the ATF that took place in Jakarta. But with a throw of 55.26 metres, she failed to make a mark in the Sydney Olympics. She has been married to her coach Jaswant Singh. Neelam is employed with the Railway Coach Factory in Kapurthala and was awarded by the Punjab Government in the year 1996. Shelley Newman
Shelley Jean Newman, now Parr and (née Drew), (born 8 August 1973) is a female retired English discus thrower. She was born in Carshalton, London and competed for Great Britain at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Athletics career Her personal best throw is 61.22 metres, achieved in June 2003 in Loughborough. This was the English record for many years and at the time and placed her fourth on the British outdoor all-time list, behind Meg Ritchie, Venissa Head and Philippa Roles. She represented England in the discus event, at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Four years later she won a bronze medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Philippa Roles
Philippa Kate Roles OLY (1 March 1978 – 21 May 2017) was a Wales, Welsh discus thrower who competed at two Olympic Games, Olympic and four Commonwealth Games. Roles was British junior athlete of the year – an honour presented at Buckingham Palace. She was the first British discus thrower to medal at junior European level; and narrowly missed out on a medal at under 23 level, finishing 4th. She competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Born in Neath, she studied at Neath Port Talbot College from where she gained her degree, and was resident in London. Vivian Peters-Chukwuemeka (born 4 May 1975) is a Nigerian shot putter and two-time Olympian. She won the gold medal in the shot put at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and has won three consecutive titles at the All-Africa Games from 1999 to 2007. Jacqueline ("Jackie") McKernan (born 1 July 1965) is a retired Northern Irish discus thrower. She represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at three Olympic Games (1988, 1992, 1996) and won silver medals at the Commonwealth Games in 1990 and the Universiade in 1993. Career Born in Belfast, McKernan was a member of the City of Lisburn Athletics Club.
