Triple Jump
The triple jump, sometimes referred to as the hop, step and jump or the hop, skip and jump, is a track and field event, similar to the long jump. As a group, the two events are referred to as the "horizontal jumps". The competitor runs down the track and performs a hop, a bound and then a jump into the sand pit. The triple jump was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games and has been a modern Olympics event since the Games' inception in 1896. According to World Athletics rules, "the hop shall be made so that an athlete lands first on the same foot as that from which he has taken off; in the step he shall land on the other foot, from which, subsequently, the jump is performed." Athletics At The 2002 Commonwealth Games
At the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the athletics events were held at the City of Manchester Stadium on 26–30 July 2002. The route for the marathon event crossed Manchester city centre and finished in the stadium. The race walk events began alongside the Lowry Centre at Salford Quays. There were twenty-five men's events and 23 women's events; the schedules were identical except that there were men's 3000 metres steeplechase and 50 kilometres walk events. Pole vaulter Dominic Johnson won a bronze medal, Saint Lucia's only medal of the Games. Sixteen Games records were bettered over the course of the competition, and two further records were set in the disability events. Jonathan Edwards (triple Jumper)
Jonathan David Edwards, (born 10 May 1966) is a British former triple jumper. He is an Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth champion, and has held the world record in the event since 1995. Following his retirement as an athlete, Edwards has worked as a sports (primarily athletics) commentator and presenter for BBC television. Formerly a devout Christian, he also presented episodes of the BBC Christian worship programme ''Songs of Praise'', until he renounced his faith in 2007. In 2011 he was elected President of the Wenlock Olympian Society following the death of its then President, Roy Rogers. He was a member of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the 2012 games. The Commonwealth Games is a quadrennial event which began in 1930 as the British Empire Games. The Commonwealth Games Federation accepts only athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations and recognises records set at editions of the Commonwealth Games. The athletics events at the Games are divided into four groups: track events (including sprints, middle- and long-distance running, hurdling and relays), field events (including javelin, discus, hammer, pole vault, long and triple jumps), road events and combined events (triathlon, heptathlon and decathlon). There are also several track and field events held for disabled athletes. Phillips Idowu
Phillips Olaosebikan Idowu, (born 30 December 1978) is a British athlete who specialises in the triple jump. He is a former World Outdoor and Indoor, European Outdoor and Indoor, and Commonwealth triple jump champion. He was also a silver medalist at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Idowu is a member of the London-based Belgrave Harriers athletics club and has been for much of his career. Despite his successes, Idowu has at times been accused of inconsistency and of failing to fulfil his potential, including his disappointing failure at the London Olympics 2012. His championship record since 2008, especially his gold medal at the 2009 World Athletics Championships, has addressed some of these criticisms; the Olympic Games is the only major championship to have eluded him, with a silver medal in 2008. Leevan Sands
Leevan Sands (born August 16, 1981 Nassau) is a Bahamian triple jumper. His personal best jump is 17.59 metres, achieved in 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. This is the current Bahamian record and won a bronze medal. He also won bronze medals at the 2003 World Championships and 2002 Commonwealth Games. He went to High School at Florida Air Academy He was suspended from March 2006 to September 2006 for testing positive on the prohibited substance levomethamphetamine. Andrew Owusu
Dr. Andrew Owusu (born July 8, 1972) is a Ghanaian athlete who competed in the triple jump and long jump. His personal best in the triple jump is 17.23 meters, achieved in August 1998 in Dakar. This is the current Ghanaian record as well as the fourth best triple jump result in Africa, behind Ndabazinhle Mdhlongwa (17.34 m), Ajayi Agbebaku (17.26 m) and Khotso Mokoena (17.25 m). His personal best in the long jump is 8.12 meters, achieved on June 24, 1995, in Saarijärvi. His personal best in the long jump was a Ghanaian record between 1995 and 2003. He received a doctorate degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 2004 and, as of 2021, is a Full Professor in the public health area within the Health and Human Performance Department at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). Oluwatosin Bamidele “Tosin” Oke (born 1 October 1980 in London, England) is a Nigerian track and field athlete, who competes in the triple jump. Born a dual national, he initially competed for Great Britain. He set the current UK junior indoor record and was 1 cm shy of the outdoor junior record. He was the 1999 European Athletics Junior Championships Champion, and came 5th at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. After multiple indoor and outdoor UK titles, he later switched to compete for Nigeria. Stephen Shalders (born 24 December 1981 in Bridgend) is a Welsh triple jumper. Andrew Ray-Jamie Murphy (born 18 December 1969 in Melbourne, Victoria) is an Australian former triple jumper, best known for his bronze medal at the 2001 World Indoor Championships where he achieved an Oceanian indoor record of 17.20 metres. Brian Wellman (born September 8, 1967) is a former triple jumper from Bermuda, who became indoor world champion in 1995, setting a new championship record (CR) of 17.72. His personal best outdoors was 17.62 metres. Both these marks are Bermudian records. In addition, he has a wind-assisted (+7.1 m/s) mark of 17.75 metres. Quincy Howe (August 17, 1900 – February 17, 1977) was an American journalist, best known for his CBS radio broadcasts during World War II. Biography Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Quincy Howe was the son of Mark Anthony De Wolfe Howe; his sister was Helen Howe. He was a 1921 graduate of Harvard University. Howe served as director of the American Civil Liberties Union before the Second World War, and as chief editor at Simon & Schuster from 1935 to 1942.
