Triple Jump
The triple jump, sometimes referred to as the hop, step and jump or the hop, skip and jump, is a track and field event, similar to the long jump. As a group, the two events are referred to as the "horizontal jumps". The competitor runs down the track and performs a hop, a bound and then a jump into the sand pit. Adelina Gavrilă (born 26 November 1978 in Brăila) is a Romanian triple jumper. She was a bronze medalist at the 1996 World Junior Championships. In 1998 she broke the 14-metre barrier for the first time, with 14.53 metres. In 1999 she improved to 14.71 metres. She won the bronze medal at the 1999 Universiade, finished twelfth at the 1999 World Indoor Championships, eleventh at the 1999 World Championships, eighth at the 2001 World Indoor Championships and at the 2001 Universiade. In 2002, she had a mediocre season in 2002, with 13.51 metres as her season's best. The next year she improved to new lengths, jumping 14.75 metres in September. Maurren Higa Maggi (born June 25, 1976, in São Carlos) is a former Brazilian track and field athlete and Olympic gold medallist. She is the South American record holder in the 100 metres hurdles and long jump, with 12.71 seconds and 7.26 metres respectively. She also has a best of 14.53 metres in the triple jump – a former South American record. She is the first Brazilian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in an individual sport. Virginia "Gi-Gi" Miller-Johnson (born January 12, 1979, in Huntsville, Alabama) is a world-class heptathlete and former US champion. Collegiate career Competing for the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks in 2000 and 2001, Miller set school records in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meters, 800-meters, long jump and heptathlon. Zita Ajkler (born 9 June 1975) is a Hungarian long jumper. She is a 16-time Hungarian national champion in the long jump, triple jump, heptathlon, and 100-meter hurdles. Her personal best is 676 cm in the long jump and 13.99 m in the triple jump (the national record is 14.00 m); 13.75 s in 100-meter hurdles (wind-1.2), 8.35 s in 60-meter hurdles, and 5,323 points in the heptathlon. Ajkler began by pole vaulting recreationally, achieved 360 cm in training after 3 months of practice, but never competed in this event. Her first big achievement was in 1998, at the European Athletics Championships in Budapest, where she came in 6th with a personal best of 664 cm. Athletics At The 2001 Summer Universiade
At the 2001 Summer Universiade, the athletics events were held in Beijing, People's Republic of China between 27 August and 1 September. A total of 45 events were contested, of which 23 by male and 22 by female athletes. The host country, China, took the most gold medals (9) and the most medals overall (16). The United States were a close second with a total of 8 golds. Five Universiade records were broken during the course of the athletics competition. Amongst the gold medallists for the host country were Dong Yanmei, who won golds in the women's 5000 and 10,000 metres races, and 18-year-old Liu Xiang in the 110 metres hurdles. It was Liu's first gold on a world stage and he became the 2004 Olympic champion in world record time three years later.
