400 Metres
The 400 metres, or 400-meter dash, is a sprint event in track and field competitions. It has been featured in the athletics (sport), athletics programme at the Summer Olympics since 1896 for men and since 1964 for women. On a standard outdoor running track, it is one lap around the track. Runners start in staggered positions and race in separate lanes for the entire course. In many countries, athletes previously competed in the 440-yard dash (402.336 m)—which is a quarter of a mile and was referred to as the 'quarter-mile'—instead of the 400 m (437.445 yards), though this distance is now obsolete. Like other sprint disciplines, the 400 m involves the use of starting blocks. Avard Moncur
Avard Moncur (born November 2, 1978) is a Bahamian track and field athlete competing in the 400 metres. He was born in Nassau. Career Under the guidance of coach Henry Rolle, Moncur's most successful year came in 2001 when he won the gold medal in the 400m and the 4 × 400 m relay at the 2001 World Championships. Moncur has only managed to make one more appearance in the individual final of a major championship, at the 2007 World Championships where he finished 8th. More success, however, has come has part of the Bahamas relay team. Thomas Dickson (born 8 July 1974) is a retired sprint (running), sprinter from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines who specialized in the 400 metres. At the 1996 Summer Olympics, he participated in the Athletics at the 1996 Summer Olympics – Men's 4 × 400 metres relay, 4 x 400 metres relay. The relay team, consisting of Eswort Coombs, Dickson, Eversley Linley, and Erasto Sampson, set a national record there with 3:06.52 minutes.
