110 Metres Hurdles
The 110 metres hurdles, or 110-metre hurdles, is a hurdling track and field event for men. It is included in the athletics programme at the Summer Olympic Games. The female counterpart is the 100 metres hurdles. As part of a racing event, ten hurdles of in height are evenly spaced along a straight course of 110 metres. They are positioned so that they will fall over if bumped into by the runner. Fallen hurdles do not carry a fixed time penalty for the runners, but they have a significant pull-over weight which slows down the run. Like the 100 metres sprint, the 110 metres hurdles begins in the starting blocks. For the 110 m hurdles, the first hurdle is placed after a run-up of 13.72 metres (45 ft) from the starting line. The next nine hurdles are set at a distance of 9.14 metres (30 ft) from each other, and the home stretch from the last hurdle to the finish line is 14.02 metres (46 ft) long. The athletics competition at the 1999 Pan American Games was held at University Stadium in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Two new events were introduced for women: pole vault and hammer throw. Anier Octavio García Ortiz (born March 9, 1976) is a Cuban track and field athlete, winner of the 110 metres hurdles at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Born in Santiago de Cuba, Anier García established his credentials early, by winning the 1995 Pan American Junior Championships. In the next year, at the 1996 Summer Olympics, García was eliminated in the quarter-finals. In 1997, García broke to the international scene by winning 60 metres hurdles, 60 m hurdles at the 1997 World Indoor Championships in Athletics, 1997 World Indoor Championships at Paris. Dominique Arnold (born September 14, 1973, in Compton, California) is an American hurdling athlete. He is tied for being the fifth fastest all-time 110 m hurdler, with a time of 12.90 s (+1.1 m/s), which was the American record from 2006 till 2010. Arnold set that mark in Lausanne, where he beat the current world record but lost to Liu Xiang. His performance is still the fastest losing time ever ran for the event. In competition, Arnold finished fourth at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics and took bronze in the 60 m hurdles at the 2006 World Indoor Championships in Athletics. Maurice Wignall (born 17 April 1976) is a Jamaican hurdling athlete. His first appearance in a major international championship was at the 1997 World Championships, where he competed in the long jump competition. He jumped 8.09, which still stands as his personal best. Wignall's success in hurdling came relatively late. He took his first medal, a bronze medal, at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. At the 2004 World Indoor Championships, Wignall won the bronze medal in 60 m hurdles which is the distance used indoor. Later that year he competed in the Olympic 110 metres Hurdles where he placed fourth in the final, missing the bronze medal by one hundredth of a second. In the semi final he set a new national record with a time of 13.17. At the end of the 2004 season Wignall won the silver medal in the 2nd IAAF World Athletics Final.
