The men's 200 metres at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea had an entry list of 72 competitors from 59 nations, with ten qualifying heats (72), five quarterfinal races (40) and two semifinals (16), before the final (8) took off on Wednesday September 28, 1988. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Joe DeLoach of the United States, beating his teammate and defending champion Carl Lewis by 0.04 seconds in the final. The defeat ended Lewis's hopes of repeating his 1984 quadruple, despite running the final under his own Olympic record time. It was the United States' 14th victory in the men's 200 metres. Lewis was the seventh man to win multiple medals in the event, matching Andy Stanfield for the best result to that point (a gold and a silver). The Seoul Olympic Stadium (), also known as Jamsil Olympic Stadium (formerly romanised as ''Chamshil''), is a multi-purpose stadium in Seoul, South Korea. It is the main stadium built for the 1988 Summer Olympics and the 1986 Asian Games, 10th Asian Games in 1986. It is the centrepiece of the Seoul Sports Complex in the Songpa District, in the southeast of the city south of the Han River (Korea), Han River. It is the largest stadium in South Korea. Clive Wright
Clive George Wright, Jr. (born 18 November 1965) is a Jamaican former track and field sprinter who specialised in the 200 metres. He won several medals with the Jamaican relay team, taking Jamaica's first World Championships relay medal (a bronze) at the 1987 World Championships in Athletics, as well as a bronze medal at the Pan American Games in 1987 and two relay bronze medals at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Troy Douglas
Troy Douglas (born 30 November 1962 in Paget, Bermuda) is a former Dutch sprinter. Originally competing for Bermuda, he finished second at the 1995 IAAF World Indoor Championships in the 200 metres event, but he changed nationality to the Netherlands in 1998. For Bermuda he participated at the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics, reaching the semi finals on the 200 metres in 1996 as well as the semi finals on the 400 metres in 1992 and 1996. He finished 5th in the final of the 200 metres at the 1991 Pan American Games. Set to compete in the 1999 World Championships, Douglas was withdrawn after testing positive for the banned anabolic steroid nandrolone. John Regis (athlete)
John Paul Lyndon Regis, MBE (born 13 October 1966) is an English former sprinter. During his career, he won gold medals in the 200 metres at the 1989 World Indoor Championships and the 1990 European Championships, and a silver medal in the distance at the 1993 World Championships. He was a member of the British teams which won the gold medal in the 4 × 400 metres relay at the 1991 World Championships, and the silver medal in the 4 × 100 metres relay at the 1988 Olympic Games. Regis is still the British 200 metres record-holder, which he set in 1994. Career Regis's most significant successes in individual events came when competing in the 200 metres. Norbert Dobeleit (born 17 July 1964) is a German television personality and retired athlete. During his active career he represented West Germany and specialized in the 200 and 400 metres. Biography Dobeleit was born in Renchen, Baden-Württemberg. At the 1987 World Championships he placed fifth in 4 x 100 metres relay and fourth in 4x400 metres relay. Patrick Stevens
Patrick Stevens (born 31 January 1968 in Leut) is a retired sprinter from Belgium. He won the bronze medal in the 200 metres at the 1994 European Championships in Helsinki and a silver medal in the 200 m at the 2000 European Indoor Championships. He earned selection for four consecutive Olympic Games for his native country, although he was unable to compete at Sydney 2000 due to injury. His best result was seventh in the famous Michael Johnson 1996 200m WR final in Atlanta. Kennedy Ondiek
Kennedy Ondiek (December 12, 1966 – July 14, 2011) was a Kenyan runner, who specialised in sprinting. He competed at the Olympics and World Championships. Ondiek participated in three events the 1988 Olympic Games. He reached the quarterfinals (second round) in the 100 and the 200 metres races. In the 4x100 metres relay race he was part of the Kenyan team that reached semifinals. Other runners in the team were Peter Wekesa, Simeon Kipkemboi and Elkana Nyang'au. Olapade Charles Adeniken (born 19 August 1969 in Osogbo) is a retired Nigerian sprinter who specialized in the 100 and 200 metres, and is the father of Michael Adeniken. Stefano Tilli (born 22 August 1962) is a former Italian sprinter who specialized in the 100 and 200 m, twice European indoor champion, three-time semi-finalist at the Olympic Games, and was the world record holder in the 200m indoor. Biography Tilli was born in Orvieto, Umbria. In his career he won 17 medals at the International athletics competitions, eight of these with national relays team. Cyprian Enweani (born March 19, 1964, in Copenhagen, Denmark) is a Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, resident and 1989 inductee into the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame for his career as sprinter. His most notable athletic accomplishment was appearing as a member of the Canadian Olympic Team at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea where he competed in the 200 metres sprint and the 4 x 100 metres relay.
