Athletics At The 1980 Summer Olympics – Men's 1500 Metres
The men's 1,500m metres was an event at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Soviet Union. The final was held on Friday 1 August 1980. Forty athletes from 29 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by 0.4 seconds by Sebastian Coe of Great Britain, the nation's first championship in the event since back-to-back wins surrounding World War I in 1912 and 1920, and first medal of any color since 1932. East Germany took its first medal in the 1500 metres since starting to compete separately, with Jürgen Straub's silver. Background This was the 19th appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. Filbert Bayi Sanka (born June 23, 1953) is a Tanzanian former middle-distance runner who competed throughout the 1970s. He set the world records for 1500 metres in 1974 and the mile in 1975. His world record in the 1500 m was also the Commonwealth Games record until 2022. Running career Born in a small village of Karatu, near Arusha, Tanzania, he had to run eight miles every day to and from school as a boy. His greatest moment was arguably the 1500 m final at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand, when he won the gold medal ahead of New Zealand runner John Walker and Kenyan Ben Jipcho. Bayi set a new world record of 3 min 32.16 s, ratified by the IAAF as 3:32.2, and Walker went under the old world record set by Jim Ryun as well. Khaled Khalifa Al-Shammari
Khaled Khalifa Al-Shammari (; 3 December 1957 16 March 2022), also known as Khaled Khalifa, was a Kuwaiti Olympic middle-distance runner. He represented his country in the men's 1500 meters at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Career Khalifa began his athletic career as a goalkeeper for the Kuwait national football team in 1972. He would go on to win 38 national and international medals in athletics. Khalifa earned his first international medals at the 1979 Arab Athletics Championships. He won the 800 m silver medal and 1500 m gold medal, running times of 1:53.98 and 3:58.4 respectively. Khalifa was seeded in the first 1500 m heat at the 1980 Olympics. He ran 3:57.55 seconds to place 8th, failing to qualify for the semi-finals. Khalifa was also entered on the Kuwaiti Olympic × 400 m team, but he did not start that race. José Manuel Abascal
José Manuel Abascal Gómez (born 17 March 1958) is a former Spanish 1500 metres runner. In 1982, he received the silver medal at the European Indoor Championship in 1500 m and the bronze medal in the same event at the European Outdoor Championship. He won the bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. In 1986, he set a personal best of 3:31.13 min but he failed to qualify for the final in 1500 m European Championship. Steve Cram
Stephen Cram, (born 14 October 1960) is a British retired track and field athlete. Along with fellow Britons Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett, he was one of the world's dominant middle-distance runners during the 1980s. Nicknamed "The Jarrow Arrow", after his home town, Cram set world records in the 1,500 m, 2,000 m, and the mile during a 19-day period in the summer of 1985. He was the first man to run 1,500 m under 3 minutes and 30 seconds. He won the 1,500 m gold medal at the 1983 World Championships and the 1,500 m silver medal at the 1984 Olympic Games. In 2000, Cram co-founded international children’s charity COCO (Comrades of Children Overseas) with British Army Major Jim Panton after running the Bosnia Comrades ultramarathon in 1998. Dragan Zdravković
Dragan Zdravković (born 16 December 1959 in Senjski Rudnik) is a Serbian former middle-distance runner. He represented Yugoslavia in international competition from the late 1970s to 1980s, and was a finalist at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Zdravković holds multiple outdoor and indoor Serbian records in athletics. Running career Zdravković initially practiced football as a youngster in Ćuprija, until a school teacher, Aleksandar "Aca" Petrović, suggested that he begin training athletics.
