The women's 80 metres hurdles was an event at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. Summary The Australians again qualified three women to the final. Shirley Strickland in lane 6 and Gloria Cooke in lane 1 sandwiched the field with a slight lead over the first barrier. By the second barrier, Strickland had edged ahead while Cooke was getting competition from Gisela Köhler in lane 2 next to her. By the next barrier, Köhler had some separation in second, while Galina Bystrova and Norma Thrower we battling for bronze in 4 and 5 respectively. By the seventh hurdle, Strickland had a full metre on Köhler. Almost a metre behind, Thrower had her head in front of Bystrova. In between the final flight, Bystrova edged ahead. Strickland won by almost two metres over Köhler, and behind on the run in from the last hurdle, Thrower managed to lean ahead for a microscopic advantage for bronze. Carole Quinton
Carole Louise Quinton (born 11 July 1936) is a female former English track and field athlete, who won silver medals at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, 1958 European Athletics Championships and 1960 Summer Olympics. Athletics career Quinton competed in the sprint and 80 metres hurdles events. She competed for Great Britain at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Despite not being in the initial British squad, she was selected to replace Pam Elliot, who withdrew as she was pregnant. She represented England and won a silver medal in the 80 metres hurdles at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, Wales. In the final, Quinton and winner Norma Thrower finished in a wind assisted 10.7 seconds in the final, faster than the previous Games record, though due to the wind assistance, it was not classified as a Games record time. Sprint Hurdles At The Olympics
The sprint hurdles at the Summer Olympics have been contested over a variety of distances at the multi-sport event. The men's 110 metres hurdles has been present on the Olympic athletics programme since the first edition in 1896. A men's 200 metres hurdles was also briefly held, from 1900 to 1904. The first women's sprint hurdling event was added to the programme at the 1932 Olympics in the form of the 80 metres hurdles. At the 1972 Games the women's distance was extended to the 100 metres hurdles, which is the current international standard. The Olympic records are 12.91 seconds for the men's 110 m hurdles, set by Liu Xiang in 2004, and 12.20 seconds for the women's 100 m hurdles, set by Kendra Harrison in 2016. The fastest time recorded at the Olympics for the men's 200 m hurdles was 24.6 seconds by 1904 winner Harry Hillman. Milena Greppi (8 July 1929 – 13 December 2016) was an Italian hurdler. Biography Milena Greppi was born in Milan into an aristocratic family. Her father was Antonio Greppi (1901–1991), 8th Count of Bussero and Corneliano and her mother was Aurora Mattei. She participated at two editions of the Summer Olympics (1952 and 1956), and had 23 caps in national team from 1951 to 1958. Barbara Ann Mueller (born May 23, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois) is a retired American track and field athlete. She represented the United States at the 1956 Olympics, running the 80 meters hurdles. Her 11.6 did not get her out of the heats. A versatile athlete, she won the pentathlon at the US National Championships in 1955 and 1956, both times defeating Stella Walsh.
