The men's marathon at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia was held on Saturday December 1, 1956. There were 46 participants from 23 nations, with 13 runners not completing the race. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Alain Mimoun of France, the nation's first Olympic marathon victory since 1928 and third overall. Yugoslavia took its first Olympic marathon medal with Franjo Mihalić's silver. Finland returned to the podium in the event for the first time since 1932 (the end of a four-Games medal streak for the nation) as Veikko Karvonen took bronze. Hideo Hamamura
was a Japanese marathon runner. He won the Boston Marathon in 1955 in a time of 2:18.22 which was a course record. He was 16th in the 1956 Olympic Games marathon in Melbourne. After retiring from competitive racing, he became an athletics coach. He died on 7 May 2000 from a malignant tumour. Harry Hicks (6 August 1925 – 25 April 2012) was a British long-distance runner and administrator for the Southern Cross Country Association (SEEA). He competed in the marathon at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Running for England in the 1949 and 1950 International CC Championship. He won the AAA Marathon Championship. After qualifying for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics he finished 15th. After retiring as an athlete he became the Southern Cross Country Association until the late 1980s. Arnold Vaide
Arnold Vaide (17 April 1926 – 5 June 2011) was an Estonian-born Swedish athlete and football coach. He was involved with various sections of the Halmstad sports club for 40 years. Athletics career Arnold Vaide was born and raised in Salla, Estonia. His brother Karl Vaide was an accomplished orienteer, skiing and shooting referee and trainer. While a student, he began training as a skier under instruction of Elmar Liiv. In 1944, following the second Soviet occupation of Estonia during World War II, Vaide fled to Sweden as a refugee while his brother Karl remained in Estonia and became an Estonian veteran orienteering champion.
