Athletics At The 1952 Summer Olympics – Men's Decathlon
The Men's decathlon at the 1952 Summer Olympics took place on 25 and 26 July, at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. Now 21-year-old Bob Mathias from the United States repeated his performances from the previous games by winning the gold medal and setting new world and Olympic records. It was the second time the United States Olympic team earned all three medals in the event, the first one being in the 1936 Olympic Games. Helsinki Olympic Stadium
The Helsinki Olympic Stadium ( fi, Helsingin Olympiastadion; sv, Helsingfors Olympiastadion), located in the Töölö district about from the centre of the Finnish capital Helsinki, is the largest stadium in the country, nowadays mainly used for hosting sports events and big concerts. The stadium is best known for being the centre of activities in the 1952 Summer Olympics. During those games, it hosted athletics, equestrian show jumping, and the football finals. The stadium was also the venue for the first Bandy World Championship in 1957, the first and 10th World Athletics Championships, in 1983 and 2005. It hosted the European Athletics Championships in 1971, 1994 and 2012. It is also the home stadium of the Finland national football team. Geoffrey Michael Elliott (7 April 1931 – 12 October 2014) was a pole vaulter, shot putter and decathlete from England. He was born in Ilford. Athletics career He represented Great Britain in both the pole vault and decathlon events at the 1952 Olympic games in Helsinki. Erkki Hautamäki (athlete)
Erkki Hautamäki (28 August 1930 – 5 September 2023) was a Finnish councillor of education ("opetusneuvos"), a Major in the Finnish Defense Forces reserves, historian and a researcher of the history of the Finnish Wars during World War II and the Soviet war plans related to World War II. He competed in the men's decathlon at the 1952 Summer Olympics. Career In the 1960s, Hautamäki served in a special task force at the Main Headquarters of the Finnish Defense Forces. From 1970 to 1990 Hautamäki served as the headmaster of Vuokatin Urheiluopisto, the Sports Educational Center of Vuokatti, in Eastern Finland. Hautamäki published the book ''Suomi myrskyn silmässä'' (''Finland in the Eye of a Storm''), in 2005, in which both the pre-Winter War and the post-Winter War Soviet invasion plans on Finland are discussed and analyzed in detail. Kjell Uno Jörgen Tånnander (born 25 June 1927) is a Swedish retired decathlete who won a bronze medal at the 1950 European Athletics Championships.
