Athletics At The 1936 Summer Olympics – Men's Shot Put
The men's shot put event was part of the Athletics at the 1936 Summer Olympics, track and field athletics programme at the 1936 Summer Olympics. The competition was held on 2 August 1936. Twenty-two athletes from 14 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The final was won by Hans Woellke of Germany. It was Germany's first victory in the men's shot put, and first medal since bronze in 1928. Germany also received bronze in 1936, with Gerhard Stöck finishing third. Between the two Germans was Sulo Bärlund of Finland with silver, the nation's first medal in the event since gold in 1920. For the first time, the United States won no medals in the men's shot put, with the three Americans finishing 4th, 5th, and 6th. Hans Woellke
Hans-Otto Woellke (18 February 1911 – 22 March 1943) was a German shot putter, who won a gold medal at the 1936 Summer Olympics and a bronze medal at the 1938 European Championships. Woellke served with the Order Police. During World War II, he was a captain in the Schutzmannschaft Battalion 118 attached to a regiment in the Waffen-SS. Sten Gunnar Bergh (20 March 1909 – 25 January 1986) was a Swedish athlete who specialized in the shot put and discus throw. He competed in these events at the 1936 Summer Olympics and finished in ninth and seventh place, respectively. At the 1938 European Championships Bergh won a bronze medal in the discus and finished fifth in the shot put. He won the Swedish titles in the shot put in 1935–42 and 1937–41 and in the discus in 1943–44. Bergh improved the Swedish shot put record several times, and his last record stood for 11 years. Harrison Samuel Francis (October 26, 1913 – April 23, 2002) was an American football player and coach, Olympic shot putter, and Army officer. Biography Francis was born in Dunbar, Nebraska, and graduated from high school in Oberlin, Kansas. He played college football at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where, in 1936, he was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. Francis was also an exceptional athlete in track and field and placed fourth in the shot put at the 1936 Summer Olympics. Francis was the first overall selection in the 1937 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles.
