Athletics At The 1924 Summer Olympics – Men's Individual Cross Country
The men's individual cross country event was part of the Athletics at the 1924 Summer Olympics, track and field athletics programme at the 1924 Summer Olympics. It was the third and last appearance of this event. The competition was held on Saturday, July 12, 1924. Thirty-eight runners from ten nations competed. Results The first three runners for each nation to finish this event also counted towards the Athletics at the 1924 Summer Olympics - Men's team cross country, cross country team result. The course was 10,650m in length. The course was unusually difficult, including stone paths that were covered in knee-high thistles and weeds. This, combined with extreme weather conditions of over 40 °C and noxious fumes emitted from a power plant near the course, resulted in only fifteen of the 38 starters crossing the finish line. Edvin Wide
Emil Edvin Wide (22 February 1896 – 19 June 1996) was a Swedish middle-distance and long-distance runner. Biography Born in Finland as Emil Edvin Hermansson, Wide moved to Sweden in 1918. He competed for Sweden at the 1920 Summer Olympics in the 3000 metre team event, winning a bronze medal, together with Eric Backman and Sven Lundgren. At the 1924 Olympics he won a silver medal in the 10,000 m behind Ville Ritola of Finland. He also finished third in the 5,000 m, behind Ville Ritola and Paavo Nurmi. At the 1928 Summer Olympics the 5,000 metre medals went to the same people as in 1924, only the Finns swapped medals, leaving Edvin with his third Olympic bronze medal. He then finished behind the same two yet again for the third time in Olympic competition to win the bronze medal in the 10,000 metres. Heikki Liimatainen (athlete)
Heikki Liimatainen (14 March 1894 – 24 December 1980) was a Finnish male athlete who competed mainly in the Cross Country Team. He competed for Finland in the 1920 Summer Olympics held in Antwerp, Belgium in the Cross Country where he won the bronze medal and helped the Finnish team of multiple gold medalist Paavo Nurmi and Teodor Koskenniemi. Väinö Sipilä
Väinö Jeremias Sipilä (24 December 1897 – 12 September 1987) was a Finnish long-distance runner. Sipilä competed in the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics, placing fourth in the 10,000 metres and being part of Finland's winning cross-country team in the 1924 Games. He held world records at the unusual distances of 20,000 metres and 30,000 metres for several years. Career Sipilä was Finnish cross country champion in 1923, 1924, 1925 and 1929. Robert Henri Marchal (10 November 1901 – 15 July 1961) was a French long-distance runner.
