Athletics At The 1924 Summer Olympics – Men's 110 Metres Hurdles
The men's 110 metres hurdles event was part of the Athletics at the 1924 Summer Olympics, track and field athletics programme at the 1924 Summer Olympics. The competition was held on Tuesday, July 8, 1924, and on Wednesday, July 9, 1924. Thirty-one hurdlers from 17 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation was 4. The event was won by Daniel Kinsey of the United States, the nation's sixth victory in the seven times the event had been held. South Africa and Sweden each won their first 110 metres hurdles medals with Sydney Atkinson's silver and Sten Pettersson's bronze, respectively. Background This was the seventh appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. Sydney Pierce
Sydney David Pierce (March 30, 1901 – May 17, 1992) was a Canadian Olympic hurdler and career diplomat. He was Canada's first Jewish ambassador. Life and career Born in Montreal, Quebec, he competed in track and field while attending McGill University and in the 110-metres hurdles at 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1922, a Bachelor of Civil Law degree in 1925 and an honorary Doctorate of Law in 1956. After graduating, he became a reporter for the ''Montreal Gazette''. He then lectured at Dalhousie University in political science and later worked for the Associated Press. He joined federal Department of Munitions and Supply in 1940 and later became chief of the economic division of the Department of External Affairs. Oscar Emile, Knight van Rappard (2 April 1896 in Probolinggo, Dutch East Indies – 18 April 1962 in The Hague) was a track and field athlete and football (soccer) player from the Netherlands. Fred Gaby
Frederick Richard Gaby (12 March 1895 – 7 April 1984) was an English hurdler who competed in the 110 metre event at the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics. In 1924 he was eliminated in the semi-finals, while in 1928 he finished sixth. Gaby won the bronze medal in the 120 yards hurdles at the 1930 Empire Games, aged between 41 - 45. Gaby started as a flat sprinter, and changed to hurdles only in 1919, upon advice from his coach Sam Mussabini.
