Athletics At The 1912 Summer Olympics – Men's 110 Metres Hurdles
The men's 110 metres hurdles was a Track and field, track and field athletics event held as part of the Athletics at the 1912 Summer Olympics programme. The competition was held on Thursday, July 11, 1912, and on Friday, July 12, 1912. 22 hurdlers from 10 nations competed. NOCs could enter up to 12 athletes.Official report, p. 61. The event was won by Fred Kelly (athlete), Fred Kelly of the United States, the fifth of five consecutive victories for the nation in the first five Olympic Games. It was also the fourth of four consecutive podium sweeps for the Americans in the event. Background This was the fifth appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. None of the finalists from 1908 returned. Frank Lukeman
Francis Lawrence Lukeman (June 20, 1885 – December 23, 1946), was a Canadian athlete. He was born in Montreal, Quebec. Biography In Stockholm at the 1912 Summer Olympics Lukeman finished fourth in the pentathlon but was awarded the bronze medal after Jim Thorpe of the United States was disqualified from the gold medal. Thorpe's disqualification was eventually overturned but Lukeman were permitted to retain his bronze medal. In the 100 metres at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London Lukeman took second place in his first-round heat with a time of 11.7 seconds. He did not advance to the semifinals. He won in his preliminary heat of the 200 metres, placing first overall. Kenneth Powell (tennis)
Kenneth Powell (8 April 1885 – 18 February 1915) was a British athlete and tennis player who competed in the 1908 and the 1912 Summer Olympics as well as at the Wimbledon Championships. Tennis Powell studied at Cambridge University and was a member of the 1905 Cambridge University Lawn Tennis Club which was captained by Tony Wilding. Powell became team captain in 1906 and 1907. In 1908 he won the singles title at the Queen's Club Championships when his opponent in the final Major Ritchie retired in the second set. That year he also won the Covered Court Championships in Sweden. Between 1905 and 1913 Powell competed in eight editions of the Wimbledon Championships. In the singles his best result was achieved during his last visit in 1913 when he defeated one of the favourites CP Dixon in the fourth round in five sets. Hermann Von Bönninghausen
Hermann von Bönninghausen (24 July 1888 – 26 January 1919) was a German athlete who competed at the 1908 Summer Olympics and in the 1912 Summer Olympics. He died after World War I due to injury by being shot in the face. Biography Von Bönninghausen was born in Bocholt. In the 100 metres event at the 1908 Summer Games, he took fifth place in his first round heat with a time of 12.0 seconds. He did not advance to the semifinals. John Nicholson (athlete)
John Patrick Nicholson (July 30, 1889 – April 2, 1940) was an American track and field athlete who competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics. He ran in the final of the 110 meter hurdles competition but fell and did not finish the race. He also participated in the high jump event but was not able to clear a height.
