Athletics At The 1900 Summer Olympics – Men's 400 Metres
The men's 400 metres was a track & field athletics event at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris. It was held on July 14, and July 15, 1900. The races were held on a track of 500 metres in circumference. 15 athletes from six nations competed. Background This was the second time the event was held. None of the runners from 1896 returned. Maxie Long of the United States was favored, as 1898 and 1899 AAU champion and 1900 AAA champion. His countryman Dixon Boardman was a strong challenger, having beaten Long at the 1900 IC4A. The United States and France made their second appearances in the event; Denmark, Hungary, Italy, and Norway made their debuts. Competition format There were two rounds: heats and a final. Umberto Colombo (1880–?) was an Italian track and field athlete who competed at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Biography Colombo competed in the 100 metres event but was eliminated in the first round (quarterfinals) when he placed third in his heat. He was similarly eliminated in the first round (semifinals) of the Athletics at the 1900 Summer Olympics – Men's 400 metres after finishing fourth or fifth in his five-man heat. Yngvar Bryn
Yngvar Bryn (17 December 1881 – 30 April 1947) was a Norwegian track and field athlete and pairs figure skater who competed in the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, and in the 1920 Summer Olympics held in Antwerp, Belgium. At just aged 18 years old, Bryn won to silver medals at the 1899 Norwegian Athletic Championships in the 100 metres and 500 metre races, in 1901 and 1902 he became the Norwegian Champion in the 500 metres, he also became the 100 metres Norwegian record holder in 1902 when he recorded at time of 11.1 seconds. In 1900 he participated in the 200 metres competition and in the 400 metres competition. In both events he was eliminated in the first round. William Moloney
William Arthur Moloney (July 10, 1876 in Ottawa, Illinois – March 12, 1915 in Chicago, Illinois) was an American track and field athlete who competed at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Moloney competed in the 400 metres. He finished tied for fourth overall in the event. He had won his first-round semifinal heat with a time of 51.0 seconds, but was one of three Americans who refused to take part in the final because it was held on a Sunday.
