''At the BBC'' is a compilation album by English musician and singer-songwriter Joe Jackson, released by Spectrum Music on 26 January 2009. Content ''At the BBC'' contains 32 tracks across two discs, all of which were performed for the BBC by Jackson and his band between 1979 and 1983. The first four tracks of disc one were recorded at Maida Vale Studios on 21 February 1979 and broadcast on John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show on 26 February 1979. The remaining eleven tracks on the disc were recorded at London's Hammersmith Odeon on 15 August 1982 and broadcast on Radio 1 on 2 October 1982 as part of their "In Concert" series. Disc two's first ten tracks were recorded at the Hatfield Polytechnic on 29 November 1979 and broadcast on BBC TV series ''Rock Goes to College'' on 14 January 1980. William Luther Johnson (September 30, 1912 – July 5, 1960) was an American alto saxophonist, clarinetist, and arranger. Early life and education Johnson studied piano as a child and began playing the alto saxophone at the age of 16. After working with lesser-known bands he studied in conservatories in Wisconsin and Illinois, then attended Marquette University. Career While in Milwaukee, Johnson played with Jabbo Smith and others. He worked with Baron Lee and Tiny Bradshaw, and in 1936 joined Erskine Hawkins, with whom he performed into the early 1940s. Erskine Ramsay Hawkins (July 26, 1914 – November 11, 1993) was an American trumpeter and big band leader from Birmingham, Alabama, dubbed "The 20th Century Gabriel". He is best remembered for composing the jazz standard "Tuxedo Junction" (1939) with saxophonist and arranger Bill Johnson. Buddy Feyne (born Bernard Feinstein, June 9, 1912 – December 10, 1998) was an American lyricist during the swing era. Julian Dash
Julian Dash (April 9, 1916 – February 25, 1974) was an American swing music jazz tenor saxophonist born in Charleston, South Carolina, United States, probably better known for his work with Erskine Hawkins and Buck Clayton. Dash was a member of the Bama State Collegians, which later became the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra. He is recognised, with Hawkins and fellow sax player Bill Johnson, in composing the swing tune "Tuxedo Junction", which became an immense hit when recorded by other (mainly white) bands, notably that of Glenn Miller. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Dash recorded for the Sittin' in With label and later was on Vee-Jay Records with his sextets.
