''At the Wolf's Table'' (; "The [Female] Tasters") is a 2018 novel by Italian author Rosella Postorino, with the English translation by Leah Janeczko. It is about a woman, Rosa Sauer, who becomes a food taster for Adolf Hitler during World War II. This is the first novel by Postorino to have an official English translation. Background Postorino derived the story from that of real-life food taster Margot Wölk. The author used her own given name for the fictionalized version of the inspiration. Rosella Postorino (Reggio Calabria, 1978) is an Italian author. In 2013, she won the ''International Prize Città di Penne'', and in 2018 she won the Rapallo Carige Prize and the Premio Campiello. Life Born in Reggio Calabria, southern Italy, in 1978, Postorino was raised in San Lorenzo al Mare, Liguria, northern Italy. In 2001 she moved to Rome. Postorino published her first story "In una capsula" (In a Capsule) in 2004 in the anthology ''Ragazze che dovresti conoscere'' (Girls you Should Know). In 2007 she released her first novel, ''La stanza di sopra'' (The Room Upstairs). Her 2018 novel ''Le assaggiatrici'' ('' At the Wolf's Table'') won the 56th Campiello Prize, the Luigi Russo Prize, the Rapallo Prize and the Premio Vigevano Lucio Mastronardi. Food Taster
A food taster is a person who ingests food that was prepared for someone else, to confirm it is safe to eat. One who tests drinks in this way is known as a cupbearer. The person to whom the food is to be served is usually an important person, such as a monarch or somebody under threat of assassination or harm. Role Food tasters have several functions: * The safety of the food may be determined by observing whether or not the food taster subsequently becomes ill. However, food tasting is not effective against slow-acting poisons that take a long time to produce visible symptoms. * The food taster may also prepare and serve food, so they can be even more diligent in preventing someone from poisoning the food. * In the event the target falls ill or dies, the similar illness or death of the taster provides evidence of deliberate poisoning.
