Aswat Al-Iraq
Aswat al-Iraq (in Arabic اصوات العراق, Kurdish ئهسوات ئهلعیراق) is an independent national news agency in Iraq, established in 2004. Funded by the United Nations Development Program, and with assistance from the Reuters Foundation and Internews, it produces over 60 stories a day in Arabic, some 20 to 25 in English and 15 to 20 in the Sorani dialect of Kurdish. All stories are published on the agency's website. Aswat al-Iraq means 'Voices of Iraq' in English. Aswat's director is the Iraqi journalist and writer Zuhair Al-Jezairy, who in 2008 was a visiting scholar at the U.S. Institute of Peace. Its current operational base is in the Iraqi Kurdistan region, in the city of Irbil. The agency operates a network of reporters and stringers in all of Iraq's 18 governorates, plus regional cities of importance to Iraqi news such as Amman, Cairo, Damascus and Tehran. Aswat - Palestinian Feminist Center for Gender and Sexual Freedoms, also known as Aswat , is a feminist organization that advocates for lesbians and other LGBT women in the Palestinian community. The group was founded in 2003, making it the first Palestinian organization for lesbians. It was initially membership-based, but has since transitioned to a movement-based structure. It is based in Haifa. The organization was cofounded by activist Rauda Morcos, who received the Felipe de Souza Award from OutRight Action International for her work with the group. The Saudi Press Agency (SPA; ar, وكالة الأنباء السعودية) is the official news agency of Saudi Arabia. History and profile The agency was established in 1970 as the first national news agency in Saudi Arabia. The agency is also the first news agency in the Persian Gulf region. The main goal of its establishment was to serve as a central body to collect and distribute local and international news in Saudi Arabia and abroad. The SPA is under the responsibility of the ministry of Media and therefore, its president directly reports to the minister. Kurt Erich Schork (January 24, 1947 – May 24, 2000) was an American reporter and war correspondent. He was killed in an ambush while on an assignment for Reuters in Sierra Leone together with cameraman Miguel Gil Moreno de Mora of Spain, who worked for Associated Press Television. Two other Reuters journalists, South African cameraman Mark Chisholm and Greek photographer Yannis Behrakis, were also injured in the attack. Sahar Hussein al-Haideri ( ar, سحر حسين الحيدري, July 15, 1962 – June 7, 2007) was an Iraqi female print and radio journalist. She was murdered by extremists on June 7, 2007, becoming at the time the 108th journalist, including the 86th Iraqi journalist, to be killed covering the Iraq War since its outbreak in 2003. Early life Al-Haideri was born in Baghdad, Iraq, to a Shia professional family. She was educated and received her degree in business administration from Baghdad University. Al-Haideri married Haithem al-Naqib, a Sunni teacher from the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. Together the couple had four daughters. The family moved to Mosul in 1997.
