Association For Practical And Professional Ethics
The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) is a non-proft professional organization that supports research, training, and education in practical and professional ethics. It was founded in 1991 with support from Indiana University and the Lilly Endowment to encourage interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching among educators and practitioners. The association sponsors the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl. The association was hosted on the Indiana University Bloomington campus until mid-2017, when APPE moved to the Prindle Institute for Ethics at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl
The Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl is an annual competitive intercollegiate ethics debate tournament for university students in the United States organized by the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE). While the term bowl is a reference to American football bowl games, the event itself may have been inspired more directly by the College Bowl quiz show. The first Ethics Bowl contest was held in 1993 at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Three judges ask each team questions that arise on topics ranging from professional ethics to social and political topics, and team members' responses, to each other as well as to the judges, are then scored by the judges. Since 1997, the national Ethics Bowl Competition has taken place every year at the annual meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. DePauw University is a private liberal arts university in Greencastle, Indiana. It has an enrollment of 1,972 students. The school has a Methodist heritage and was originally known as Indiana Asbury University. DePauw is a member of both the Great Lakes Colleges Association and the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Society of Professional Journalists was founded at DePauw. History Indiana Asbury University was founded in 1837 in Greencastle, Indiana, and was named after Francis Asbury, the first American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The people of Greencastle raised $25,000 to entice the Methodists to establish the college in Greencastle, which was little more than a village at the time. The ''International Journal of Applied Philosophy'' is a biannual peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes philosophical examinations of practical problems. It was established in 1982, and contains original articles, reviews, and edited discussions of topics of general interest in ethics and applied philosophy. Learning is the process of acquiring new understanding, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, attitudes, and preferences. The ability to learn is possessed by humans, animals, and some machines; there is also evidence for some kind of learning in certain plants. Professional Ethics
Professional ethics encompass the personal and corporate standards of behavior expected of professionals. The word professionalism originally applied to vows of a religious order. By no later than the year 1675, the term had seen secular application and was applied to the three learned professions: divinity, law, and medicine. The term professionalism was also used for the military profession around this same time. Professionals and those working in acknowledged professions exercise specialist knowledge and skill. How the use of this knowledge should be governed when providing a service to the public can be considered a moral issue and is termed "professional ethics".
