Assam Pradesh Congress Committee
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (or Assam PCC) was formed in June 1921. Its headquarters is at Rajiv Bhavan in GS Road Guwahati. Kuladhar Chaliha was the first elected president and Chabilal Upadhyaya was the first selected president of the committee when it was founded. Bhupen Kumar Borah is appointed as the new president on 24 July 2021 replacing Ripun Bora. Chabilal Upadhyaya
Chabilal Upadhyaya was born on 12 May 1882 at Budhigang (Undivided Darrang) present day Biswanath district, was the first (selected) president of the Assam Pradesh Congress committee. In 1919 Upadhyaya's family settled at Mazgaon (Gongmouthan), Behali Tehsil. Political contributions Chabilal Upadhyaya, popularly known as Chabilal Babu was a prominent leader of the Indian Freedom Movement from Assam.Upadhyaya joined the war of independence. The 1978 Assam Legislative Assembly election was held to elect members for 126 assembly seats to constitute the seventh Assam Legislative Assembly. Sarat Chandra Sinha
Sarat Chandra Singha (1 January 1914 – 25 December 2005) was an Indian politician and Chief Minister of Assam. He was a leader of Indian National Congress, Indian National Congress (Socialist) and Nationalist Congress Party. He was known for his value-based politics, Sinha belonged to a rare breed of politicians who sacrificed his life for the welfare of the downtrodden people of Indian society. Bimala Prasad Chaliha
Bimala Prasad Chaliha (26 March 1912 – 25 February 1971) was a Leader of Indian National Congress and a Freedom Fighter who was imprisoned at Jorhat Jail in 1942 for active participation in Mahatma Gandhi's Quit India Movement against the British Government. He was elected to the post of Chief Minister of Assam for Three Consecutive Terms, once from Badarpur Constituency and twice from Sonari Constituency. He was in office from 28 December 1957 to 6 November 1970. He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1971. Political career During his tenure as the Chief Minister, the ''Assam Official Language Act, 1960'' was enacted, which made Assamese language the sole official language of the state. Elections to the Assam Legislative Assembly were held in February 1962. A total of 409 candidates contested the 105 constituencies. 101 men and four women were elected. The Indian National Congress won the popular vote and a majority of seats and Bimala Prasad Chaliha was appointed as the Chief Minister of Assam. Bishnu Ram Medhi
Bishnuram Medhi (24 April 1888 – 21 January 1981) was an Indian politician and freedom-fighter who served as the Chief Minister of Assam from 1950 to 1957 and Governor of Madras State from January 1958 till May 1964. Early life Bishnuram Medhi was born to poor Assamese peasants, Sonaram and Alehi, of Hajo, near Gauhati, on 24 April 1888. He was a very bright student. Bishnuram studied at Cotton Collegiate School in Gauhati (now Guwahati) and completed his matriculation in 1905. Forefathers of Bishnuram settled in Hajo in early eighteenth century from the erstwhile Koch Kingdom, Cooch Beher via Barpeta and was given the charge of "Medhi" in the famous Hayagreeva Madhav Temple of Hajo.
