Ashwellthorpe Railway Station
Ashwellthorpe was a railway station that existed in the village of Ashwellthorpe, Norfolk, on a cutoff line between Forncett and Wymondham. This entry covers the history of the line and the station. The station and line was opened in 1881 with the passenger service being withdrawn in 1939 and the line closing in 1951 although a siding remained at the Wymondham end until 1976. Description Ashwellthorpe station was located 2 miles and 76 chains from Forncett station and consisted of two platforms with the main station building which incorporated a two-storey stationmaster's house) being located on the down side. This was equipped with a booking office, toilets and a waiting room. A simple shelter was provided on the up platform and the signal box was located to the north of that. Eastern Counties Railway
The Eastern Counties Railway (ECR) was an English Rail transport, railway company incorporated in 1836 intended to link London with Ipswich via Colchester, and then extend to Norwich and Great Yarmouth, Yarmouth. Construction began in 1837 on the first nine miles at the London end. Construction was beset by engineering and other problems, leading to severe financial difficulties. As a result, the project was truncated at Colchester in 1843 but through a series of acquisitions (including the Eastern Union Railway who completed the link between Colchester and Norwich) and opening of other lines, the ECR became the largest of the East Anglian railways. Ashwellthorpe And Fundenhall
Ashwellthorpe and Fundenhall is a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk, situated some 6 km south-east of Wymondham and 20 km south-west of Norwich. The parish includes the villages of Ashwellthorpe and Fundenhall, which lie about 1 km apart, although rather farther by road. The civil parish has an area of 9.74 km2 and in the 2001 census had a population of 756 in 301 households, the population falling to 750 at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of South Norfolk. Fundenhall was a separate parish until it was annexed by Ashwellthorpe in 1935.
