1999 Ashford Borough Council Election
The 1999 Ashford Borough Council election took place on 6 May 1999 to elect members of Ashford Borough Council in Kent, England. The whole council was up for election and the council stayed under no overall control. Background The previous election in 1995 saw the Conservative party lose control of the council. Going into 1999 the council was seen as one of the Conservatives top targets with the party needing a 6% swing to take control. Stoke-on-Trent Central is a constituency in Staffordshire. It has been represented by Jo Gideon of the Conservative Party since the general election of 2019. Jo Gideon
Joanna Mary Gideon (born 7 November 1952) is a British Conservative Party politician, who has been the Member of Parliament ( MP) for Stoke-on-Trent Central constituency since the 2019 general election. Early life and career Gideon studied at Stourbridge High School, and then earned a degree (BA Hons in German) from the University of Birmingham. She has worked in higher education as a small business owner and a social entrepreneur: she ran a business importing and selling handmade paper. Political career Gideon contested the marginal seat of Scunthorpe at the 2015 general election, but lost to the Labour incumbent, Nic Dakin. At the 2017 general election, she stood in another marginal seat, Great Grimsby, and finished 2,565 votes behind Labour's sitting MP, Melanie Onn. Wye, Kent
Wye is a village in Kent, England, from Ashford and from Canterbury. It is the main settlement in the civil parish of Wye with Hinxhill. Hop varieties including Wye Challenger were bred at Wye College and named for the village. In 2013, ''Sunday Times'' readers voted Wye the third best place to live in the UK. History The village's name comes from the Old English "Wēoh" meaning ''idol'' or ''shrine''. Wye may have been used for worship by the pre-Christian Angles. Wye became an important communications centre because of a ford across the River Great Stour connecting with ancient trackways across the North Downs. Romans constructed a road between Canterbury and Hastings using the gap through the North Downs and there have been suggestions the straight Olantigh Road may have been built by them as a separate route from Wye to Canterbury on the east of the River Stour. 2023 Ashford Borough Council Election
The 2023 Ashford Borough Council election took place on 4 May 2023 to elect members of Ashford Borough Council in Kent, England. This was on the same day as other local elections in England. At the previous election in 2019, the Conservatives had held onto a majority winning 26 seats out of the 47 up for election. In the intervening years a number of by-elections and defections caused the council to go into no overall control, with the Conservatives continuing to govern as a minority administration, led by Gerry Clarkson. He chose not to stand for re-election in 2023. The council remained under no overall control following election. The 2011 Ashford Borough Council election took place on 5 May 2011 to elect members of Ashford Borough Council in Kent, England.
