''Artistry of the Mentally Ill: a contribution to the psychology and psychopathology of configuration'' (german: Bildnerei der Geisteskranken: ein Beitrag zur Psychologie und Psychopathologie der Gestaltung) is a 1922 book by psychiatrist Hans Prinzhorn, known as the work that launched the field of psychiatric art. It was the first attempt to analyze the drawings of the mentally ill not merely psychologically, but also aesthetically. Johann Knüpfer
Johann Knüpfer (1866–1910) was a schizophrenic outsider artist and one of the "schizophrenic masters" profiled by Hans Prinzhorn in his field-defining work ''Artistry of the Mentally Ill''. Knüpfer was a baker's apprentice for three years as a youth before moving to a large city where he worked in a cement factory and learned the trade of locksmithing. His friends persuaded him to marry, but the union was unhappy from the start. He was an alcoholic and an abusive husband, and mistrusted not only his wife but everyone he knew. He attempted suicide in 1902 and was committed soon afterwards. It became evident that he had been having paranoiac delusions for years, and visions in which Christ explained why he was being persecuted. Franz Pohl
Franz Pohl (1868–1940)Krannert Art Museum, p. 32. was the pseudonym of Franz Karl Bühler, a schizophrenic outsider artist and one of the "schizophrenic masters" profiled by Hans Prinzhorn in his field-defining work ''Artistry of the Mentally Ill''. Bühler was a metalsmith by trade until 1898. In that year he was committed to a mental institution after being pulled on a cold winter day from a canal in Hamburg, into which he had jumped to escape imaginary pursuers. He remained in an asylum for the rest of his life. As he "receded into an autistic existence", he produced a large number of drawings and writings. Viktor Orth (1853–1919) was a Schizophrenia, schizophrenic outsider artist and one of the "schizophrenic masters" profiled by Hans Prinzhorn in his field-defining work ''Artistry of the Mentally Ill''. A naval cadet in his youth, Orth was plagued by a paranoia of being poisoned as early as 1878, and in 1880 saw fit to flee his ship and attempt suicide while on a train. From 1883 until his death he would be hospitalized. He believed himself at different times the King of Kingdom of Saxony, Saxony, the Duke of Monarchy of Luxembourg, Luxembourg, and the King of Congress Poland, Poland. August Natterer (3 August 1868 – 7 October 1933), also known as Neter, was a German outsider artist with schizophrenia. Biography August Natterer, given the pseudonym ''Neter'' by his psychiatrist to protect him and his family from the intense social stigma associated with mental illness at the time, was born on 3 August 1868 in Schornreute near Ravensburg, Germany, the son of a clerk and the youngest of nine children. Natterer studied engineering, got married, travelled widely and had a successful career as an electrician, but was suddenly stricken with delusions and anxiety attacks. Hans Prinzhorn
Hans Prinzhorn (6 June 1886 – 14 June 1933) was a German psychiatrist and art historian. Born in Hemer, Westphalia, he studied art history and philosophy at the University of Vienna, receiving his doctorate in 1908. He then went to England to receive voice training, as he planned to become a professional singer. He later received training in medicine and psychiatry, serving as an Army surgeon during World War I. In 1919 he became assistant to Karl Wilmanns at the psychiatric hospital of the University of Heidelberg. His task was to expand an earlier collection of art created by the mentally ill and started by Emil Kraepelin. When he left in 1921 the collection was extended to more than 5,000 works by about 450 "cases". In 1922 he published his first and most influential book, ''Bildnerei der Geisteskranken. Peter Moog (1871–1930) was an outsider artist with schizophrenia, and one of the "schizophrenic masters" profiled by Hans Prinzhorn in his field-defining work ''Artistry of the Mentally Ill''. Moog became a waiter and later a tavern owner, getting married in 1900 to a woman with whom he had three children. August Klett, or Klotz (1866–1928), was a German outsider artist with schizophrenia and one of the "schizophrenic masters" profiled by Hans Prinzhorn in his field-defining work ''Artistry of the Mentally Ill''. The pseudonym August Klotz (''Klotz'' being a disparaging term for a person of low intelligence) was given by Prinzhorn.Krannert Art Museum 1984, p. 11 He was born in Heilbronn.
