Artis ( he, ארטיס) is an independent nonprofit organization in New York City that supports contemporary artists from Israel whose work addresses aesthetic, social and political questions to inspire reflection and debate. History Rivka Saker, Chairman of Sotheby's Israel, founded Artis in 2004 to create a network of resources for contemporary artists from Israel. Artis hired its first Executive Director, Yael Reinharz, in 2008 and has since hosted art professionals in Israel, awarded grants to artists and exhibitions, presented public programs and commissions with organizations such as the New Museum, Performa, Swiss Institute, Tate Modern, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; mentored artists in career development, and produced video interviews with artists and other resources available on its website. Sigalit Ethel Landau ( he, סיגלית לנדאו; born 1969) is an Israeli sculptor, video and installation artist. Biography Sigalit Ethel Landau was born in 1969 in Jerusalem. She spent several years in the US and the UK. Between 1990 and 1995, she studied art at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. During this time, she spent one-semester as an exchange student at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. She currently lives and works in Israel. Palestinian Campaign For The Academic And Cultural Boycott Of Israel
The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) was launched in April 2004 by a group of Palestinian academics and intellectuals in Ramallah, in the West Bank. PACBI is part of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign. The campaign calls for BDS activities against Israel to put international pressure on Israel, in this case against Israeli academic institutions, all of which are said by PACBI to be implicated in the perpetuation of Israeli occupation, in order to achieve BDS goals. Roberta Smith
Roberta Smith (born 1948) is co-chief art critic of ''The New York Times'' and a lecturer on contemporary art. She is the first woman to hold that position. Rivka Saker
Rivka Saker ( he, רבקה סאקר) is an art collector. Based in New York and Tel Aviv, she serves as a chairman of the Sotheby's Israel, and the founder and board chair of Artis. In 2004, Saker founded Artis, a non-profit art organization to support Israeli artists and to create opportunities for their exposure abroad. She has helped support projects by Israeli artists including Yael Bartana, Gilad Ratman, Naama Tsabar, and Ariel Schlesinger and more. Saker was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. Yael Bartana ( he, יעל ברתנא; born 1970) is an Israeli artist, filmmaker and photographer, whose past works have encompassed multiple mediums, including photography, film, video, sound, and installation. Many of her pieces feature political or feminist themes.
