Arthur De La Mare
Sir Arthur James de la Mare (15 February 1914 – 15 December 1994) was a British diplomat. He rose to the rank of High Commissioner of Singapore, and was a leading authority on Asian affairs to the British Foreign Office. Life and career Arthur James de la Mare was born into a farming family in Saint John, Jersey. He grew up speaking the Norman French patois of his native island. He was educated at Victoria College, Jersey, then won a scholarship to Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he gained a double first in modern languages. He joined the Foreign Service in 1936 and served in Tokyo, Seoul, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. De la Mare was acting consul general to Seoul by 1938 when the consul general fell ill and had to return to Britain. At the time he had nothing more than two years' Japanese language training. Saint John, Jersey
St John (Jèrriais and ) is one of the twelve parishes of Jersey and is around north of St Helier on the north coast of the island. It has a surface area of 8.7 km2. Matthew Francis Parris (born 7 August 1949) is a British political writer and broadcaster, formerly a Conservative Member of Parliament. He was born in South Africa to British parents. Early life and family Parris is the eldest of six children (three brothers and two sisters) and grew up in several British territories and former territories: South Africa, Cyprus, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Swaziland (now Eswatini) and Jamaica, where his father was working as an electrical engineer. David Cole (diplomat)
Sir David Lee Cole, KCMG, MC (31 August 1920 – 28 May 1997) was a British diplomat. He was British High Commissioner to Malawi from 1964 to 1967 and British Ambassador to Thailand from 1973 to 1978. Cole was born at Newmarket, Suffolk, the son of Brigadier D. H. Cole, CBE, LittD, and Charlotte Cole (''née'' Wedgwood). Cole was educated at Cheltenham College and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where he was an exhibitioner and took first-class honours in History. His university studies were interrupted after one year by the Second World War, in which he served with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers from 1940 to 1945 in India, Iran, Madagascar, and Italy. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1944, for his actions during the crossing of the Garigliano river. Sam Falle
Sir Samuel Falle (19 February 1919 – 20 February 2014) was a British diplomat and decorated Royal Navy officer. He served as Ambassador to Kuwait and Sweden, and High Commissioner to Singapore and Nigeria. Career Falle was educated at Victoria College, Jersey. He served in the Royal Navy 1937–48 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross "for gallantry in the face of overwhelming odds whilst serving in during her last action in the Java Sea on 1st March, 1942". The High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to the Republic of Singapore is the United Kingdom's foremost diplomatic representative in Singapore. John Vernon Rob (17 December 1915 - 7 March 1971) was a British diplomat and the first British High Commissioner to Singapore. Rob was born in Chertsey, Surrey and educated at Hordle House School, Oundle School and St John's College, Cambridge. Sir Michael Cavenagh Gillett KBE CMG (12 July 1907 – 20 January 1971) was a British diplomat. Education Gillett was educated at the Royal Naval College, Osborne and Royal Navy College, Dartmouth and then at Manchester University. Career in China Gillett was appointed a student interpreter in the British China Consular Service in January 1929 and served as Vice-Consul in Canton (now Guangzhou), Hankow, Nanking and Kashgar. He was promoted to the rank of Consul in 1937 and was Acting Consul General in Kashgar from June 1938 and Acting Consul at Tengyueh (now Tengchong) from 1940 to 1942.
