Arthur Shaw (footballer, Born 1924)
Arthur Shaw (9 April 1924 – 2 November 2015) was an English professional footballer who played as a wing half in the Football League for Brentford, Arsenal and Watford. Career Born in Limehouse, Shaw made a total of 64 appearances in the Football League for Brentford, Arsenal and Watford. He also played non-League football for Southall, Hayes and Gravesend & Northfleet. Shaw made 25 league appearances during Arsenal's 1952–53 First Division championship-winning season. A flag bearing his name flies in tribute on the Ken Friar Bridge, close to Arsenal tube station. Limehouse
Limehouse is a district in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in East London. It is east of Charing Cross, on the northern bank of the River Thames. Its proximity to the river has given it a strong maritime character, which it retains through its riverside public houses and steps, such as The Grapes and Limehouse Stairs. It is part of the traditional county of Middlesex. It became part of the ceremonial County of London following the passing of the Local Government Act 1888, and then part of Greater London in 1965. Ken Friar
Kenneth John Friar OBE (born 13 August 1934) is a former board member, managing director and secretary of Arsenal Football Club. In September 2020 he was appointed life president of the club. Ken Friar was educated at St John's School, Highbury and Highbury County Grammar School after passing the eleven-plus. Friar began working at Arsenal part-time as a 12-year-old. He left school in 1950 and started work in the club's box office. Friar rose through the club ranks and became company secretary replacing Bob Wall in 1973. During this time, he took part in discussions held in the 1970s between the boards of Arsenal and rivals Tottenham Hotspur FC to share a new stadium at Alexandra Palace. In 1983, he was appointed managing director by chairman Peter Hill-Wood, a role he lasted in until 2000. Football League Third Division South
The Third Division South of The Football League was a tier in the English football league system from 1921 to 1958. It ran in parallel with the Third Division North with clubs elected to the League or relegated from Division Two allocated to one or the other according to geographical position. Some clubs in the English Midlands shuttled between the Third Division South and the Third Division North according to the composition of the two leagues in any one season. This division was created in 1921 from the Third Division, formed one year earlier when the Football League absorbed the leading clubs from the Southern League. In 1921, a Northern section was also created called the Third Division North.
