Arthur "Duke" Reid
Arthur "Duke" Reid CD (21 July 1915 – 1 January 1975) was a Jamaican record producer, DJ and label owner. He ran one of the most popular sound systems of the 1950s called Reid's Sound System, whilst Duke himself was known as The Trojan possibly named after the British-made trucks used to transport the equipment. In the 1960s, Reid founded record label Treasure Isle, named after his liquor store, that produced ska and rocksteady music. He was still active in the early 1970s, working with toaster U-Roy. He died in early 1975 after having suffered from a severe illness for the last year. Biography Reid was born in Portland, Jamaica. James MacCallum Smith
James MacCallum Smith (26 April 1868 – 6 August 1939) was an Australian politician, newspaper proprietor and stock breeder. He lobbied unsuccessfully for many years for the secession of Western Australia from the Federation of Australia. Biography Born in Drumchardny near Inverness, Scotland, he was the son of gatekeeper James Smith and Helen née McPherson. Little else is known of his early life, but in 1884 he was working for the ''Northern Chronicle''. Some time later he emigrated to Australia, working briefly for a country newspaper in Queensland, then moving to Sydney to manage the ''Australian Mining Standard''. In 1893 he moved to Coolgardie where he joined a consortium which purchased ''the Argus'' newspaper for £250. He sold his share a year later for £500 on the back of prosperity from recently discovered gold. Five years later the owners had refused an offer of £150,000 for a walk in-walk out sale of the paper. Arthur Reid (golfer)
Arthur Edwin Reid (16 September 1882 – 6 January 1959) was an English professional golfer of Scottish descent. He won the 1905 Swiss Open and the 1918 Philadelphia Open Championship (tied with Pat Doyle). Reid also competed in The Open Championship and the U.S. Open. In the 1909 Open Championship he finished in 47th place and was tied in 37th place in the 1919 U.S. Open. Golf career Reid worked at the North Shore Club in Blackpool, England. In September 1907 he accepted a position as the head professional at the Bristol and Clifton Club. Prior to his time at North Shore Club he had been engaged at Boston, Woodhall Spa, Gainsborough, Lucerne, Paris, and Seaford Links Club in Seaford, England. Reid won the 1905 Swiss Open. The Open was played on the Lucerne Course and was contested over 36 holes, four rounds of the 9-hole course.
