Arthur Mason (trade Unionist)
Arthur Mason (1875 or 1876 – 17 March 1933) was a British trade unionist and political activist. Mason joined the Great Central Railway in 1893, based in Gorton, and he became an engine driver when he was 27 years old. He joined the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF), and began working full-time for the union in 1905. In 1916, he became Organising Secretary of the union's Manchester District. Mason was a supporter of the Labour Party, and in 1918 the union sponsored him as a candidate in Chester Chester is a cathedral city and the county town of Cheshire, England. Arthur James Mason (4 May 1851 – 24 April 1928) was an English clergyman, theologian and classical scholar. He was Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity, Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge, and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. Early life The third son of George William Mason JP, of Morton Hall, Retford, Nottinghamshire, by his marriage to Marianne Atherton Mitford (born 1821 in India), a daughter of Captain Joseph George Mitford (1791–1875), of the Madras Army, Mason was educated at Repton School and Trinity College, Cambridge. The third of four sons, his youngest brother, Charles Evelyn Mason, was killed in the Zulu War of 1879. His brother William Henry Mason was a High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire. Arthur John Mason (17 September 1869 – 2 December 1946) was an Australian organist and journalist, remembered as Sydney City Organist from 1901 to 1907, when he moved to London as correspondent for the ''Sydney Morning Herald''. He was a son of George Birkbeck Mason (29 October 1828 – 2 October 1899), musician and entrepreneur, and grandson of Abraham John Mason (1 January 1794 – 18 August 1858), wood engraver of London and New York.
