Arthur's Nose
''Arthur's Nose'' is a 1976 children's book written and illustrated by writer Marc Brown, focusing on the experiences of Arthur Read, a fictional anthropomorphic bipedal aardvark. The character of Arthur later acquired fame and inspired several other picture books and the long-running PBS animated television series adaptation. Plot Arthur is a young anthropomorphic aardvark residing in a world populated by anthropomorphic animals. Marc Brown (author)
Marc Tolon Brown (born November 25, 1946) is an American author and illustrator of children's books. Brown writes as well as illustrates the ''Arthur'' book series and is best known for creating that series and its numerous spin-offs. The names of his two sons, Tolon Adam and Tucker Eliot, have been hidden in all of the ''Arthur'' books except for one. He also has a daughter named Eliza, whose name appears hidden in at least two books. He is a three-time Emmy award winner; the ''Arthur'' TV series adapted from the books was named number one on PBS for three years (1997, 2000, 2001). He also served as an executive producer on the show during seasons ten through twenty-five. He currently lives in Hingham, Massachusetts. Arthur Read
Arthur Timothy Read is a fictional anthropomorphic aardvark created by American author Marc Brown. He is in the third grade and lives in the fictional city of Elwood City. Physical appearance Arthur is an anthropomorphic aardvark. In Brown's first ''Arthur'' book, ''Arthur's Nose'' (1976), Arthur is shown with a long nose and resembles an actual aardvark, though as the books progressed (as seen in the first season of ''Reading Rainbow'' in its 13th episode, ''Arthur's Eyes'') and eventually became an animated TV series. The character's most recognizable form is a light brown, slanted face with small ears and nostrils with signature round brown-rimmed eyeglasses. Aardvark
The aardvark ( ; ''Orycteropus afer'') is a medium-sized, burrowing, nocturnal mammal native to Africa. It is the only living species of the order Tubulidentata, although other prehistoric species and genera of Tubulidentata are known. Unlike most other insectivores, it has a long pig-like snout, which is used to sniff out food. It roams over most of the southern two-thirds of the African continent, avoiding areas that are mainly rocky. A nocturnal feeder, it subsists on ants and termites, which it will dig out of their hills using its sharp claws and powerful legs. It also digs to create burrows in which to live and rear its young. The animal is listed as "least concern" by the IUCN, although its numbers are decreasing. Aardvarks are afrotheres, a clade which also includes elephants, manatees, and hyraxes.
